My driving instructor had a Riley 1.5; that light car with 68bhp was a fast car in England at the time(this model won the British Saloon Car racing championship in !959). I personally owned a '54 Ford Prefect to practice on then drive to University in once I had passed my test; it had a 3 speed floorchange with a huge gap between 2nd and 3rd, which with only 36 bhp at 4400 rpm meant revving the nuts off if slightly more rapid progress was to be made, but not in the rain please because the vacuum operated wipers would stall at full throttle!.

First driving was on a 69 Oldsmobile Cutlass and learned how to drive a standard on my Dad's 70 Jaguar E type conv. First car was my 59 Austin Healey 100-6, which I got in 75 and still own after owning over 100 cars.

This was the kind of car our friend Jack had.

Back in the 1960's Jack my parents best man at their wedding used to drive me around the back country roads of Norfolk UK going to the pubs. Great looking car and pic. Jack's car was a pea green. I am impressed that you still have it. Assuming no rust in your part of the world? Brings back the memories. :)

First drive was in Dads '57 Belair Hardtop. He bought it in 1968 for $250.00. Needed a college transportation car, still has it today.
Also much seat time in the family '85 Chevy Caprice.

Learned to drive manual in a friends '56 Austin Healy 100-4 Le Mans. Neat car, was a post production factory conversion to the Le Mans spec.
Also used his '91 Isuzu Rodeo. Healy was way easier to drive with all the torque.

Cooper

Yeah, I think it was a 1953 or 54, don't remember. Back then as a 15 year old piece of British trash, it wasn't worth much, cost more to rebuild than it was worth.

I learned to drive it when I was 15 in 1969, in Oak Ridge, TN, I think it was the only one in the state at the time. We had moved from Boston area to Oak Ridge where my Dad took a sabbatical from MIT to work at ORNL. I remember my Dad pushing me to accelerate around corners, not put on the brakes.

1975 Brown Chevy impala with a bad muffler....I thought it sounded cool. I graduated to an 87 Chrysler Codoba 6 cylinder family car, and also learned how to shift a "3 on the tree" with my dad's chevy inline 6 pickup......slow !

My first ride was a 1973 Green Ford Pinto wagon, with wood stickers down the sides of it. It had the 2.0L 4 cyl motor and did an absolute top speed of 68 MPH. We got it for $150 because it had been in the big flood of 1981, and still stunk of it.
