PLEASE don't call a Mustang a "Muscle Car"

They were called "pony cars" from the beginning...others like Camaro, Firebird, "Cuda, etc. followed. Please don't confuse them with a true muscle car..

I always called them PLASTIC cars.

Q) how can you tell the difference between a late 90's/early 2000s Pontiac and a mustang?

The ugly cheap plastic is glued to the OUTSIDE of a Pontiac .......

One of my dad's friends had a brand new late 60s GTO. I think it was a 67. I remember getting a ride in that monster. He could light up the tires (bias ply) at any speed. My parents had a 1967 Oldsmobile Delta 88 with a "little" 425 engine. My older brother and the son of the guy with the GTO did a few burnout contests. (Dad's were not consulted) The GTO won with the locker rear end it would smoke both rear tires. The Delta 88 just had a peg leg.

My parents tried to sell that Delta 88 in the very early 1980s. They had no offers even at $150. They finally called the scrap man and sold it for scrap.

They were just ordinary cars used for transportation when gas was 20 cents per gallon.

The first moostang I drove was back around 1981 and the interior was made of hard squeaky plastic.
The last moostang I drove was a rental, about 5 years ago.
The inside of the car was made of hard, squeaky plastic.

So you tell me Mr. My **** don't stink, have they really changed that much in 5 years?

Yes, they've changed IMMENSELY in the last 5 years. We just bought the wife a '15--it's a fabulous car inside and out.

I think the new mustang is a closer to an actual sports car, but ive never been into semantics


I would probably take a gt 350 over a base 991

The 'Cuda didn't follow anyone, it was the first pony car out. Also, as far as I'm concerned, lots of the pony cars grew up to be musclecars,. Between my brother and I we had lots of pony cars mostly mustangs, he had 2 Shelbys 67 and 68 and many others with big brutish motors. I had a few, not as many as he, mine mostly the early 289's, he always favoured the later and more muscly muscle cars.

Here's my last one, (I got this on a fair trade straight-up for a 944s) and sold around
2007 We called them musclecars at our house, wrongly I guess.

I recently returned from the Palm Springs area where I rented a new Mustang convertible.

Wow.

Though it had the base 6-cylinder engine, it is light years better than the 5.0 convertible I used to have.

The old car's structure seemed to be made of pasta if cornered hard, as if the car were going to twist in half.
The new car scoots around corners very competently. Very impressive power and fuel economy. I popped the hood to verify it was only a six.
Though not as nimble as an air-cooled 911, it was a very satisfying car to drive.

The convertible top is solid & quiet- So much better than the one layer of canvas over the exposed steel frame of the old car.

The only advantage of the old car was better visibility, especially with the top up. The new car's rear window is pretty small, leaving large blind spots in the rear corners. Other than the name, two completely different cars. Ford gets a thumbs up on this one.

I would love to have a new GT350 or GT350R. These are great cars and nothing like the crap from 5 years ago.

While it is still a pony car, the latest Mustang is a real sports car too and, in certain iterations, a muscle car as well!

I have thought about turning the 928 into one of those, but I generally think well of any Mustang from this generation.

My sentiments, exactly. We just got back from Florida, where we had a 2016 convertible, with the Eco Boost 4 that puts out 310 HP. The 6 spd. auto with paddle shifters was actually fun, and it also had cooled seats, which was great in the 90 degree plus temps.

We stll have the 87 GT 5.0 convertible that we bought new, and there is no comparison between the two vehicles.

Currently driving an 04 GT conv as my DD, and I love it. It has plenty of power, probably quicker than that big block Chebby in the video, and didn't cost me an arm and a leg to buy, or maintain.

I could care less what anyone else thinks of it, I love it, and will most likely buy another newer one in a few years. My Porsche 944 will be up for sale in a few weeks because it can't do any of the things mentioned in my first sentence.

The Chev Impala in the video was no doubt cool, but not very practical for anything but Sat afternoon car shows/cruises. Try to drive it in the rain/snow, or park it at work.

From early on pony cars always had a high end model that was a verifiable sports car, but by number sold most were very average performance. Comparing the entry level 2016 Mustang at 300hp competes with base Chevy Impala (305) and Buick LaCrosse (304) and the lowest end Volvo S60 at 302hp.

In contrast base Porsche Carrera at 350hp/3k weight would get smoked in a line by the highest end Hundai Genesis Coupe model at 348hp/1500 lb but that does not mean the average Hyundai is faster than the average Porsche-far from it.

The highest end of the line always pulls them into the showroom where their finances steer them to the base model. Nothing wrong with that at all, high end Mustangs have shown just how much power they can apply to a crowd. sorry wrong thread. . I mean to impress a crowd.
I like Mustangs, I have Mustang friends. Lots of them. Look I'll call one. . .

It couldn't corner at all either. At least mine couldn't. Neither could my Chevelle. They are why I got into bikes.

OK, based on the expertise of this forum, I believe we can safely say that moostangs are no longer plastic pieces of crap like they were for decades.

I'll refrain from bashing them as being plastic.

I make no promises that i'll be able to contain myself completely when it comes to the flavor of the month gimmick styling or the "fine outstanding examples of today's yoots" these cars seem to attract.

I certainly will not refrain from commenting on the POSER EXHAUST NOISES these cars make or the personality disorders they are designed to cater to.
Of course that could also apply to any newer Chrysler car or camaro or Ferrari.

Piped in exhaust noise, bah!
