I'm getting too old for this... 1st bad dirt bike wipe out in 30 years

Tonight I pulled up the wheelie of wheelies at 30-40 MPH on my CRF450X... I meant to roost and it hooked up.

Bike came over, I got bucked off and slid down an undeveloped gravel road at 30-40 MPH... I'm really impressed with my gear. I have some rash on my back, shoulder, and arms. My arse hurts like hell and has 2 scrapes on it.

In terms of damage, the rear fender is cracked and one of the buckles is broken on my mx boots.

Things could have been way worse. My brother and 5 year old son saw it all. I will probably see the Chiropracter on Monday.

Dang. That 450 is a beastly missile with roughly the same power to weight of a new turbo S. I had an 02 when they first came out and roll on wheelies in 5th were possible with good traction.

Lay on a bag of ice off an on till Monday.

Since reaching the half century mark, I have noticed that I have definitely slowed down a lot when I ride my dirt bike.

Ouch! I'm told it's better to fall off the back of your bike than go over the front. Do you have an informed opinion on this?

BTW I absolutely cringe when I see riders lose their bikes mid-jump, 20' in the air. Looks like they're trying to swim their way out of it. Glad you were geared up.

Take care!

The wreck I had when I was about 11 or 12 involved going over the bars and breaking some ribs. I have an ice pack in the small of my back right now and it is feeling a bit better.

LOL...

Funny that low speed crashes seem to hurt more...

How did the 5 year old react to dad being thrown about like a rag doll on gravel?

Hope you are both ok....

Yet another reason why (at 64 YO) I'm considering a trials bike!

I did this ^^^^^ last year at 50 years old. The dog ran out in front of me and I went over the handlebars avoiding him. I was only doing about 15 mph in the yard on my Honda XR200, but no gear on. Several broken ribs, and a a sore, muddy jaw.

I sold my last dirt bike last year after over 50 years of riding. After a hip replacement I just wasn't riding with enough confidence in the strength of the joint, especially after i popped it out in a very minor road bike accident.

I ride the same trails in my Polaris now. Not as much fun but it keeps me out of the bars, both kinds

Uncle William - That was a wake-up call. You need to listen to your body now. I got the same feeling on my 2-stroke 465 Yamaha when I was about that age.....Different kind of crash that put a tree branch thru my engine case.

I said at age 50 I'd quit riding the single track and quit riding dirt entirely at age 60....

Well, I'm 64 and still doing both. Had a bad crash that took two shoulder surgeries last year. Now, the pace is slower........

Boy, I hear you...

I just turned 55, and have been kinda sorta back on a dirt bike for about five years after a 30 year absence. Even in my early 20's, when I got married, serious about my career, wanted a family, etc. I could see getting hurt off and on on a dirt bike was going to have to be out of the picture, so I sold my last one. When I got back into it, I went straight to the "big dual sport and logging roads" thing, knowing that the yee-haw times on the MX bikes were best left as fond memories. Even at that, however, I have still managed to earn a few stitches and new scars on the logging roads.

I'll be 50 this summer and have been considering a Crf250x for some heart rate excersize. 20 minutes a day on my track should do it. I'll definitely be riding a bit less all out than I did when I was in my 20s. Been seriously thinking about hanging up the street riding though, damn Internet and dash cams!
