Junkyard turbocharging

Last year I bought the twin to my first car, a 1984 Renault LeCar. Don't laugh, they're fun.

I got the basics sorted out last year, and was going to get it back on the road this summer, but now my SC is mostly back together so I'm not in a hotfired rush to deal with the Renault. I want to get it painted over the winter, and the clutch is toast so the engine/transmission needs to be pulled.

I'm really tempted to put together a ghetto fab turbo setup for a bit more beans, but don't know the best way to approach it. It has a Weber 32dir67 progressive carburator, and I already have it apart to be rebuilt. Before I do so, is there anything I should be considering if I want to turbocharge this car?

Also wondering if I'm better off to go draw-through or blow-through... my understanding is that draw-through is easier to set up. I also have a nice little k03 turbo off an old mk3 vw diesel I used to own

Not looking for maximum/best performance. Just looking to ake the car silly fun. Turbo lag won't bother me.

Just the idea of this thread is immediately more satisfying than the "new top gear"

I would not mess with a carb and a turbo
get a TB or a later cars MPFI set up and mega-squirt controler

or just a whole motor from a r-5

I would be tempted to move the motor to the back seat
but that has been done

You can buy a FI system with basic harness for $500 shipped from Gotech out of south africa.
I believe it was 5000RSA plus 1000RSA shipping which converts to around $500.
They have a FB page, it's better than their website.

I think the F7R motor+5 speed out of the Clio 1.8 16 valve will fit your car and will give you 130BHP straight out the box. Cheap as chips to buy that power train from a European wrecker.
Suggest Renparts in Doncaster UK as your starting point, and they will likely know if I am correct in my suggestion.

I like this car enough to scab together an exhaust system to a used turbo and pump/pull it through the carb. Not sure I like the car enough to convert it to FI.

This car is already mid engined, technically. Just fwd, mid engined.

Yes, if you box in the carb, it doesn't really matter if there is a little leakage. Easier to pressurize the whole assembly than to try to force it all into the inlet. A couple of PSI at low RPMs could do wonders...

I just noticed these... lol, ba$tards. I actually had this car catch fire on me briefly in the fall but I was able to deal with it quickly. That whole thing everyone says about replacing furl lines in old cars.... not such a bad ideer

Oh no, not again!

It's better to burn out, than to fade away

How about pics AND it didn't happen?

Notice my 3 bolt mags... OH YEAH

I have the carb apart and have a rebuild kit... it was FILTHY inside. No wonder I couldn't keep it running properly.

I'm not in a huge rush to get it running again right away, because I want to explore this option while it's apart.

So basically just seal up the inlet and feed the carb as-is? No need to modify anything in the carb to make it run under pressure? Again, I am fine with it being a compromise as long as it can be made to run. I have a spare engine, so I don't mind blowing one up if it's fun enough

What? No that will not work. The carb works by volumetric flow. If you increase the pressure (air density) you will not get enough fuel for the same volume and will run lean. With Fuel Injection, there is usually a MAP sensor and it will adjust the fuel flow with the air density.

To be fair.... I had a small fire on the bug, but I was able to get it out. Should have let it burn! Was insured for more than I sold it for. But it was in the garage at the time!
