Zombie PPOT threads?

I'm curious why really old threads come back to life on this forum. Do y'all remember there's an eight year old thread pertaining to something you want to post, or is there a zombie-bot that randomly wakes old threads?

Thank you in advance.

More often than not an old thread is raised by someone who has only just joined the forum.

They make 3 or 4 posts and then nothing.

Also some bots will find a subject and type in something. Members reply and later the bot comes back and edits the first post to a link to other sites and the web crawlers see that link to the web site and it raises their search relevance.

There are times, admittedly rare that I can recall an old thread that is related to what I wish to post. I've been around this place for some time. I'm also in the habit of searching for a thread before I start a new one.

The best zombie threads are in Classifieds where a new member asks if a 3.2 motor is still available at $6500. And other such gems from before the bubble.

I do my best not to start a new thread on something that's already been discussed. This means I occasionally resurrect an old thread that I've found in a search.

That's what I was doing when I posted in an old Bruce Lee thread. I know there was a more recent in-depth discussion, but the search tool only wanted to find something much older. I think the search tool here is broken.

every now and then my mind turns to the topic of would a Siberian tiger or a grizzly bear win a cage match and I have some new insight that you all, indeed all of humanity, would be the poorer for not hearing.

This is exactly the proper reason to revive an older thread. Particularly in the technical forums, where some legends have left us a priceless knowledge repository, bumping an old thread can avoid recreating the wheel. Speaking only for myself, it’s also a bit nostalgic to see some of the older poster’s thoughts. I’ve been here 20+ years and seen a lot of folks join, learn, contribute, and move on. Some are rather memorable and are missed.

Either 42 or Miata, the real trick is coming up with the question

All I know is that any time I post - seems like it kills the thread.

Let’s see if that theory holds true today.

Yes...I remember pretty much every thread I have posted in... even 20 years ago. It is the benefit (or maybe punishment) of having a good memory. If I see something that is related and want to post about it, I generally call up that thread. I really don't like it when essentially the same threads are restarted over and over. Why not just continue the conversation? In the tech thread, I answered exactly the same question many, many times...until I just stopped answering.

Funny, I feel that too so it must affect a few.

I agree and don't agree. We have new enthusiasts coming in all the time. It's really their world now. No more Grady or Early_S_Man gonna help now even though the solutions may be always the same old solutions.

I started in on the old tube radio hobby. That is decidedly a predominance of old men and they have to have a lot patience with the newbies of any age. Half or more of the interest is because of tube guitar amps and high end analog amps. And that part does tend to attract a younger set along with the guys that are still around from the Leo Fender age. Strictly old radios is a very dying hobby and HAAM radio is worse now tha they have digital.

Old threads are just as good as new ones, but tend to be lengthy and one never knows if there is misinformation included. So I lean towards the same ol' question being answered again and again, but in newer threads. Sometimes there is a twist and the thread starter did his research and did get his answer. And you know what? It gives the chance for some others to put in their 2 cents that weren't around when Pelican started. Otherwise we'd just get Bentley manuals, Wayne's books and some others like Bruce Anderson.

Anther note: someone was or might have archived every E_S_M and Grady Clay post and bound the whole thing together; the Porsche bible. Turn off the forum except for PPOT and events.

But if you need, you can pull Bill Verburg, Syncroid, John Walker's Workshop, Chuck Moreland and forgive me for not remembering the scores of extremely deep knowledgeable folks I don't remember at this moment. Is that what we want?
