Insane. To the extent that there were "victims" of VW's little game, they are not the owners of the VW vehicles, but the people walking or riding their bikes on the roads with the polluting cars. VW's penalty should be distributed to the public in general, not the buyers of VW cars.

So...everybody who didn't buy a car from VW should get money from VW. Reminds me of a certain socialist candidate...

It isn't easy to understand which pedestrian succumbed to their lung disease due to VW. It is easy to determine who bought a TDI and is $5k short in resale value now. There will be huge fines to the EPA / general fund, but of course none of those will get to the pedestrians and bicyclists ...

If the cars resale value is diminished then the owner is a 'victim'.

If the owner was mislead and purchased based on the 'clean diesel' campaign then the owner is a 'victim'.

The only thing the government is going to do, is to create even more victims. They did the same sort of thing in the BP gulf oil spill.

$5k should cover the paint repairs caused by tree huggers flinging rocks at those cars as they drove by.

What about the rocks? Nobody ever considers the poor rocks

5 grand plus the $1000/3 year roadside for saying we messed up. That's about how much I have on my 0% note.
I would take it and laugh all the way to the bank....

600,000 somewhat clean diesel cars compared to unregulated heavy construction machinery, and other PM10 polluters....
Maybe it's a CA things where there's high pollution, but in AZ the air quality for diesel emissions is typically not an issue....

How much money does VAG have hidden in Panama?

These cars may not be as clean as VW said they were but they are possibly still the cleanest diesels out there. If they change them they will use more diesel and in turn pollute more.
I love my wife's TDI Golf the way it is.

So the "5000.00" will be considered income and people would then be taxed at like, 45%?

It's amazing to me how anyone can think money "fixes" a "problem" like this. These are still incredibly clean running, efficient cars any way it's sliced. Because they were marginally dirtier than allowed against some arbitrarily derived standard put in place by some faceless, unelected bureaucrats should never have been cause for concern in the first place.

Agreed. The idea that the owners of these cars have suffered more than the general public for this marginal increase in emissions is laughable.

For most owners the emissions are secondary. Easy to say the customers should not worry about it if you don't own one of these.

I had planned to own mine for 15 years and I have kept spotless and carefully maintained. Now I may have to sell it back, if I want to or not. Or have it sliced open by some VW wrench to detune and diminish fuel economy and possibly reliability.

If I want out of it, I can only sell it for 70% of what it was worth before the scandal broke.

I have to listen to stupid jokes certainly weekly if not daily and the whole experience has soured me on VW and even buying a new vehicle ...

VW better be paying a pretty penny to make me whole, otherwise one of the 25 lemon lawyers that has written me will be happy to take my case ... individually, not in a class action.

Seeing how VW execs are handling this makes me even more mad. What a bunch of douchebags ...

What was the market value of these cars, pre-scandal? Does $5K approximate the loss in value?

I would venture and guess on average 5k will do the job on market value loss. But they will have to do more. pre scandal value +5k will fit the bill for most owners, I am sure. They hired expert help on this ... If those numbers are true, I think they hit the spot.
