SKUNKED! Anybody Else Been Sprayed?

The wife is gone for a few days, so last night Tank and I ate a bloody streak and stayed up late watching action movies (Predator and Terminator 2). Just after midnight I took Tank out to pee before bed. As soon as I opened the door Tank bolted through and grabbed and shook a skunk on the front porch. Before I knew what it was I felt a spray across my face. When the dust cleared, the skunk limped off and Tank was foaming at the mouth and doing little circles with his face on the pavers. I wiped my face and started gagging. We both took direct hits.

45 minutes of washing with Natures Miracle skunk remover, followed by Tanks dog shampoo, under the cold hose only softened the smell. I stripped and left everything outside and the entire house still smells like skunk. Multiple hand and face washings with dish soap and I still smell it with every breath.

Anybody have any secret solutions?

Dawn dish soap did a good job for my dog but not 100% - ended up taking her to the V-E-T for a scrub down and added a mani/pedi treatment.. well worth the $25 we paid.

If Tank has a collar, get a replacement. We took the collar off our girl and left it in the sun/rain/fresh air for 2 months before it lost teh stink.

Tomato juice = yes. My dogs were skunked twice. This worked well. Get a few #5 cans. ( 1quart or so). This took care of MOST of the smell. Time takes care of the rest.

Our dog is light tan and white, so it made her look like an axe murderer... which was kinda cool.

We don't usuially have large amounts of tomato juice on hand, but Dawn dish soap seemed to work for us. It won't remove the smell completely, but once the dog dries out (no longer wet), it is barely perceptible.

my dog grabbed a skunk and went into our house..eyes watering, and drooling..

i jumped on her and took her into the shower..i just stepped in. it was all over both of use.

i used whatever shampoo and soap product i had in the shower. pretty much the entire bottle of fancy shampoo of my wife's and i did bad things to a bar of soap.

it worked. i could smell it faintly for about year on the dog. but it was okay. so, i think speed was more important than the product.

oh the house. i burned toast. like set the toaster in the living room and just kept pushing the lever to lower the bread. i had that bread damn near on fire. the house filled with smoke and every detector went off. when the smoke cleared, no more skunk smell.

We both just stepped out of the shower. I had an almost full large bottle of V8 juice in the fridge. I washed him again with the V8 and then used a whole bottle of Dove shampoo. He's MUCH better now, but I can still smell it on my hands and face though. I guess I'll desensitize to it by the end of the day.

I have all the towels and my clothes washing with bleach and detergent. I think the smell in the house may just be residual from bringing the towels inside the laundry room.

Amazing Tank's response. I thought he was poisoned and dying. He planted his face on the ground and was doing circles. Foam was spouting from his mouth like a science experiment.

I'm thinking he'll not go for a skunk again...

We get a skunked dog once a year or so.

This works: How to Remove Skunk Odor from Dogs - For Dummies

Basically the same stuff: De-Skunking Your Dog : The Humane Society of the United States

The particles-per-thousand air to funk ratio for skunk spray is a wonder of nature.

We had a dog jump out of our tent and got sprayed(while camping) at 2:00 in the morning somewhere in Indiana. The dog then jumped back in the tent with the fresh smell all over him and us. It was awfully cold running an outside faucet (53 degree water) for 1/2 hour while washing the dog with Dawn, before we could stand the smell of him and us.

Had another incident where we had one walking around our back yard. I went and got my son's BB gun in an attempt to scare him off without hurting him. He wouldn't take a hint, and just circled every time I shot him in the Butt, so I went and got my Remington 870 shotgun and blew him clean across the creek. Unfortunately, we smelled him for the next two weeks.

SeaHawk's advice is solid. That is our go to when our dog/dogs get sprayed. It won't get rid of all of the smell but surely helps. Your dog will smell for a few months if it took a direct hit like you say. Especially when they get wet. Olive took a direct blast to the face last year. Awful!!!

To someone not prone to perseverance, I once suggested cyanide, if that helps.

Tomato juice doesn't work.

Dish soap (to solubilize the organic sulfides - stinky), water, and some hydrogen peroxide. You need to oxidize the sulfides.

hit a skunk with my Civic Hybird a few months ago, the smell was sooo bad I bought some interior air freshener. Didn't help.......just needed time to air it out.

Peroxide and baking soda
How to Remove Skunk Odor from Dogs - For Dummies

Best thing I've found.
Ours used to get hit a couple of times a year minimum.

NM - it was already posted.
It does work better than anything else though.
