Internet TV

Finally going to "cut the cord" on Cable TV. What do you use for Internet TV? Its only me and my wife now. very few channels we watch and would also like CBS, for our local news only. Looking for suggestions and potential issues. Thanks

Well internet TV is not quite the same as watching broadcast.

The whole space is in a bit of a flux.

Public networks have rolled out there own apps.

The model varies.

NBC, ABC, you can access free but you need to authenticate with your internet provider credentials and you'll need a channels package. Not sure if basic antennae service cuts it or not.

CBS uses it's own subscription model. $6.00 per month with commercials, $10.00 without.

I've been using Apple TV for several years now. Never had cable or other pay TV service. NBC shows are available to stream free on Apple TV (there are advertisements), but other networks you have to have a cable subscription. There is a CBS news feed as well (free - national news). We subscribe to Netflix and also purchase shows and/or movies on iTunes.

Definitely try over the air antenna in addition to streaming. Go here to see what channels you should get for free:

TV Fool

Then buy an inexpensive antenna like one of these and enjoy free HD over the air tv:

If you don't already have a smart tv get a roku and sample some services.

Android TV box with Kodi.

You need nothing else (except the internet).

If you live too far out to get OTA broadcasts, how are you getting enough Internet bandwidth to support getting your TV programs via the Internet?

I use Apple TV and a Netflix subscription. I can (and do) buy anything I want on a pay-per-view basis. Netflix occasionally has some decent or entertaining content that (for the time being anyway) is worth $8 a month.

I don't go to ABC / NBC / CBS / CNN for anything. No loss to me.

We are close to 80 miles from any source but have good signal still with our old and broken antenna.

If you have the bandwidth you can check into Sling TV (dish network streaming). I have Dish and have one of their unpublished packages that costs about $30/mo. It's amazing what they do when you ask what package discounts they have for current customers and when they say "none" move to what package do you offer for current customers about to become former customers. Then! packages you can't find anywhere start coming out of the woodwork. BTW, I'm in the flats of Ohio and could pull FT Wayne (60 miles) very easily.

I have SlingTv for $20 and I think it's great if you have interest in the channels they offer. AMC, A&E, Comedy Central, IFC, Food Network, Travel Channel, CNN, Bloomberg, and 3 ESPNs.

That with Netflix or Hulu or Amazon Prime or something is plenty of TV.

We have been using Sling TV and Hulu for a while now , the plus's far out weigh the minus's . Our youngest son is using the Google streaming device along with his Play station and gets all the TV he wants to watch .

The game is getting interesting.

It's evident that cable providers will ultimately end up being little more than broadband providers.

That is until google fiber and similar non bundling services start rolling out in more markets over the next few years.

The Blockbustering of the industry is in full swing.

I use playstation Vue and find its interface and DVR abilities to be light years better than sling. I had trouble with sling playback freezing.

The playstation vue is now available over roku, fire tv and playstation 3 and 4.

There are different tiers of service with the Vue with the cheapest about 30$.

Winner!

This is the route I went. Bought one of these: Matricom G-Box Q2, then loaded Kodi, Netflix, and PLEX.

For Kodi the setup can be a little complex but you want to install Exodus, authenticate with Trak.tv for tracking shows. Other plugins you might want would be Genesys and Stream All The Sources.
