whats going on with 928's
been looking for a DD.
always thought a 928 would be a nice driver and have watched them off and on for years. seems like a while ago you could not give one away and now I am seeing them in the 30k+ range, I was trying to get a BMW 330ci with a bad motor for $300 but that fell thru. my DD now is an 88 325is which I really love even though its in need of paint. my son wants it really bad and I don't want to give it up but when the 330 deal popped up it made start thinking about another DD. oh well, he is back to driving the Honda. maybe a nice 944 I was looking at 88 BMW m5's back when I bought the 930 but now those have gone out of my DD price range.

Inflation and a rise in demand.
Not many good 928's around anymore, the neglected ones were probably scrapped or still sitting in a field. Same story with the 944 Turbo.

Yep. The crap is mostly out of the market, and people are getting nostalgic for them. I remember when old 911s were cheap too...

Yeah, its funny, suspect the same will happen with 944's. They were so cheap that a lot of them got wasted by no maintenance, and only the goodish ones are left.

To many, now that Porsche is part of the VW group and builds SUVs, they are not as special as when they were a small, independent sports car company.
Air-cooled 911s, 944, 928, yada yada are cars from that "special" company. |

yea but it seems that not many people want the 928. the air cooled porsches have always been in higher demand.
there is one here in town I saw for 10k. must be an early one because just a basic 928. I thought he will never sell that at 10k, especially in THIS town,. then I got on here and see them at 30k+, but they are S's, GT's

Ive been watching them locally, and they seem to fester on the market for pretty long periods .
A local, however who is active in the cars and coffee crowd, and I think he owns a Ferrari, recently picked up an s 4

The same thing that's going on with ALL the cool older cars. All-of-them. In fact the only remaining cool/fun/affordable classic I can think of anymore is the Bmw2002. For some reason. And it's climbing as well now... |

Even by today's standards they're a super car.
Swap compatibility with just about any engine from gmpp catalog will fit as if it belongs in the car. The limit though is as it always was. The ratio of automatics to standard was 3:1. So standards demand a premium... Have you driven one? Effing smooth. Anything past 300 hp will spin the tires in second. Um the aluminum front end body panels, that even tesla can't reproduce.... Did I mention they're an amazing car in general?

I looked at them for a few months before the new year. I was only considering manual cars so the market was pretty small. The deal breaker for me on 928s is the interior. If the interior is in bad shape it will be costly to make right.
I ended up with a '91 M5 instead. They can still be bought cheaply but I think that will change pretty soon and they will follow the e28 upwards. |

Surprisingly here in Houston, I see two (2) different 928s that are daily driven one is a very yellow GTS and the other is early brownish pre-83. Each one puts a huge smile on my face when I see them, I think the 928 or 944 would be a great daily driver, but you almost need a back-up just in case you need to take it off the road for a few days for maintenance work.
Like the OP, I've been looking at these cars on and off for years...they are great machines.

I would blame it entirely on a combination of the Rennlist 928 board combined with vendors like Roger at 928SRUS and Greg Brown of Precision Motorwerks and Mark at 928 International. The 928 market is significantly smaller than the 911 but is no less passionate. Years ago many cars did fall victim to the 944 phenomenon but it would seem that the trend is for a new round of serious owners picking these cars up and caring for them as needed.
GTs and GTSs are going for stupid money though the GTS's north of $100K asking will probably never see that. My experience so far is from a mechanical perspective, these cars are easy to work on. It's the electronics that are dubious. Once sorted and with a few easy performance additions, they are phenomenal cars. I am still up in the air on my engine build with a ton of factors, including a potential new shop, to consider. Hoping to decide next week. Greg Brown said of the guys from Singer came down to check on his own car and drove one of Greg's strokers with cams and exhaust. He was blown away, said that this 928 would "easily drive around" their custom hot rod 4.0 911 engines. He commented that the torque made the huge difference.
