Earth's Relentless Warming Just Hit a Terrible New Threshold

The number of climate records broken in the last few years is stunning. But here's a new measure of misery: Not only did we just experience the hottest April in 137 years of record keeping, but it was the 12th consecutive month to set a new record.

It's been relentless. May 2015 was the hottest May in records dating back to 1880. That was followed by the hottest June. Then came a record July, August, September, October, November, December, January, February, March—and, we learned from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Wednesday—the hottest April. In an age of rising temperatures, monthly heat records have become all too common. Still, a string of 12 of them is without precedent.

Perhaps even more remarkable is the magnitude of the new records. The extremes of recent months are such that we're only four months into 2016 and already there's a greater than 99 percent likelihood that this year will be the hottest on record, according to Gavin Schmidt, who directs NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies.

July's Extreme Heat Breaks Records Across South

Record-Breaking July Heat

Seven cities in Florida measured reported their hottest July on record: Jacksonville Beach, Daytona Beach, Orlando, Lakeland, Melbourne, Tampa and Fort Lauderdale.

Houston and New Orleans are two Gulf Coast cities that recorded their warmest July on record.

In the Desert Southwest, El Paso, Texas, and Roswell, New Mexico, both experienced their warmest July on record.

Portions of the Southeast were included in the cluster of cities that saw the warmest July on record. Columbia, South Carolina; Alma, Georgia; Brunswick, Georgia; Oak Ridge, Tennessee; and Meridian, Mississippi, all ended up with their warmest July in history.

Not only was July a historical month in regards to temperatures, it was also the driest month for some locations.

We went 30 days without rain as well, which didn't help matters!

Then we had a little 1 week break with temps going back down from brutal to still hotter than he(double hockey sticks).....now it's back up again.....man I can't wait until fall gets here!!!

Here in Ohio, I am currently in negotiations with God to have 20 degrees in temperature, and 20% in humidity duly transferred from every day in July and August, to every day in January and February.......I'm hopeful !

As a result of my SCI I lost the ability to perspire normally. This heat is downright dangerous as I can't cool off by sweating. So I soak my cap and shirt when I'm in the garden or doing other outside stuff.

Warm in Chi-town this summer. The humidity has been very high. I'm told by others, the weather feels like Miami. Not much rain either.

Minimal flooding and no wildfires here. It has been tropical for a couple of weeks, many 90/90 days in a row, but it's all good. It'll be 33 degrees and raining soon enough.

Almost perfect summer weather here in west Michigan. Timely rains and mid 80's most days. All the crops are looking excellent and the lawns are as green as springtime.

We were getting real horrible here but last 3 days it rained non stop and cooled down a bit. Relatively mild summer all along. I suspect it will be hot September. Humidity is unbearable though.

Yes, but I was in the Oxford/Abingdon/Didcot area last month and it was 34C or so almost the whole time I was there.

Here in East Tennessee it has been at or above 90F every day for 50+ days straight with dew points in the 70s typically. July was the fifth hottest July every recorded here.

Yes, Florida is hot. We generally hit 89 and 90 in the summer, but then it rains for ten minutes each day and we drop 5-10 degrees.



But then where else can you grow Coconuts in the US?
