iPhone as slippery as a sliver of soap

Since Apple puts so much effort into making the iPhone very very thin, I decided to remove my iPhone case and use the naked phone in all its slimness.

The problem is, not only is the phone very slim, it is very slippery. Practically like the dripping sliver that a bar of soap becomes right before it disappears all together. I've almost dropped the phone several times, and find myself holding it with two hands, and it has come flying out of my suit jacket pocket twice.

Is it crazy to put skateboard tape on the iPhone's edges?

You guys and gals should see John these days. New job, new look. I'm pretty sure that his bulky phone with a case ruins the lines of the suit he proudly wears!

I agree, though, with the gist of this thread... Apple really needs to consider bead blasting the sides of the iphone for gription.

I wonder if there's a chemical that could be applied that would do the trick? Friction tape is so gauché!

I have a really cheap really thin case from BestBuy that is great and just rubbery-sticky enough.

I think it's an insignia or a dynex. Just go take a look and you'll find a good one for $10 or so.

I use just the rubber liner part of the Otterbox case. Couldn't live w/o it. I've dropped the phone countless times w no broken screens and it sticks to whatever you put it on. More than once, I've driven away w it on the roof or trunk of my car, figured it out miles later and it's still there!

The only warning, and it's a big one; twice in recent years I've accidentally pulled a folded over envelope full of hundreds out w the sticky phone from my pocket and lost the $$ forever. Once it was *trip to Europe* type money and the other time it was about a grand.

Can't believe I'm admitting this here.

Still on my old 4 but I have a nice thin walnut case that works great. No cracks or scratches in 3 years, although case has cracked near mute switch.

When I get a new phone and a new wood case I'm gonna try checkering the sides of it... that or send it out to someone to do it. Maybe a diamond pattern on the back or something...

My slippery I-phone story: Take wife to see her grandkids in Montrose, CO....I'm bored after a few day and offer to take two of the kids to Black Canyon Nat. park........Windy and snowing at the top, but great views of the canyon...The 14 year old asks if he can borrow my Iphone and take a selfie at an overlook.....6 year old there when I say OK and I'm going back to the car for a jacket.....My case is broken, phone goes over the cliff and 14 YOA goes down to get it....6 YOA follows him wearing only sandals on his feet.....I return to a very scary scene of these two kids almost dying to go get my phone........Promptly bought a new case and swore them to not tell Grandma or Parents........USE PROTECTION I SAY

Have to agree, the iPhone up to 5S was great to hold in the hand.
The 6, not so much.
No problem to hand over the 5 or 5S to another person when showing photos or something, but handing over the 6 is a scary adventure ...

And, why the hell did they move the on/off-button from the top to the side? When pushing that button I automatically hold against by pressing the other side ... where the volume-buttons are.

Why oh why would people take a thin, elegant, minimalist object and clad it in a huge, obnoxious, clunky-looking shell? I personally can't stand the otter boxes (and others) for that reason - it's like taking your 911 and sticking a Chevy small block 350 in it and maybe adding a pickup truck bed for good measure.

If you want to justify it to yourself from "practicality" standpoint then fine, up to you but personally I can't stand anything that adds bulk, chunkiness or heft. One of the things that always has attracted me to the iPhone's is the industrial design aspect - which is excellent. They put a lot of thought into the appearance and "sex appeal" of their products even admittedly at the expense of some ergonomic considerations.

Do what you will but it always makes me laugh to see people with these slim, sleek, sexy phones stuck inside a 1" thick, coffin-like pocket brick.

I was in the "iphone as an art object" camp until I broke 2 screens in a single week. I had to go to the thinnest case I could find, which also, as Jeremy found, is a cheap sticky one.

I'd love to have no case, but the 6 is too slick. Beautiful, but too slick.

it is indeed a nice design, but that kind of defeats the purpose if it is so fragile that the majority of users use a case to protect it.

My wife left her phone on the car, and it fell off at 45 MPH. Not only was I able to retrieve it, but it suffered no damage because of the case.

Almost dropped it how many times ? Get a case.

I used to spray a little 3M Super 80 on my hands when I wanted to use my phone but clean up was a problem and sometimes I'd spray too much and my fingers would get stuck to the screen and then I'd have to get some acetone out...you get the idea.

So I got one of these. Super slim, protective and stylish.

+1 agree with the bulky phone cases. However, me being the black hole of "sex appeal", no gadget is going to pull me out and into the light

I have been running for years with a very thin hard case that has a pleather textured backing. Just enough to keep it safe on a table and still easy to pull from my jeans pocket. I have dropped it 10 times at least with no damage.
