Broken strut?
My new moostang has one flaw. Around a 50mph, I get a little bit of wobble in the steering. The tires are worn all around, but I noticed the the front left has some scalloping on it. Smells like a bad strut to me. Pushing down on the body doesn't tell me much. It doesn't bounce, but if the other struts are good it would hard to tell. You think I'm on the right track?

is there weeping? It's probably a weak strut. Pothole damage, perhaps.
I did a pair in under an hour. Easy job. I'd verify the balancing on the wheels too. Check for a dent or other boogery. rjp

Could be those old tires.
Replace and balance and start there?

Aren't those the ancient but low mileage tires? I would replace those before I touched anything. I've had a lot of weird vehicle issues solved by replacing old tires, even those with good looking tread.

They are old tires. I'll do a front/rear swap and see if it helps. Thanks for the input guys.

13 year old tires are liable to start coming apart on you. Look for leaky strut, but put new tires on before you do much driving. New tires first, then see if the thing does a bit better.

Cost me nigh on $1500 to fix the minor damage from an 8 year old tire that came apart at 55 mph. PDR and plastic parts.
I'd driven it 20 miles and had the replacements - that came with it - in the garage. Not worth running old tires. |

You are doing 50 on 13 year old tires?
That's Darwin award material. Don't mean to be a jerk but that is seriously stupid. Front/rear change? Moronic. I don't see any tigers, I'll just get out here. get new tires, pay someone qualified to look at the front suspension.

I was doing a hell of a lot more than 50. And I've left a few 50ft burn outs here and there as well.
Tires are not dried out, and they do have some tread left. I will be replacing them.

I replace anything older than 5 years old no matter how good they "look". Tires and brakes are pretty much ground zero for vehicle safety, not real smart to roll the dice on either. Not trying to be a dick but you are ignoring pretty much every bit of professional advice out there.

Well the tires need repaplcing, start there and then go to a brake shop. Estimates are free, prolly needs an alignment as well.

They can look fine, right up until they fly to pieces. For about $600-$700, you can get four of the stickiest of the icky tires, unless you plan on winter driving it, which would be a sin, if you ask me.
If you are going to keep driving on the ancient tires, can I have your Duc if you kill yourself?

They say Michelin Pilot Sports have the most linear feel and progressive control when swapping ends or power sliding into large crowds. Probably worth the extra coin.

Seems like you would want snow tires for plowing into crowds like that.

Tobra, I don't think EVERY Mustang owner mows down crowds, a lot of them like to just nail curbs or jump over center islands into oncoming traffic....
Different strokes...

I've prolly logged half a million miles on tiars older than JP.
According to this thread I must be the luckiest SOB in the world. Did i tell ya about the vibration my truck developed in Fresno last month? Made it home (300 miles) but the steering wheel was shaking pretty good.. had to replace that tiar the next day cause it had a big bubble in the sidewall. It wasn't very old tho.
