Are 5-10 year old Mercedes ML's ok? Educate me.

I'm looking at options to replace my wife's supercharged Lexus LX450 with lockers.

We no longer need the off road capabilities of the Lexus.

The Mercedes ML series looks interesting to me. How are these? Are they reliable? Do they get good gas mileage? The only other Mercedes I have ever owned was a Unimog 406...

God no, they're awful.

That's the short answer. Stick w domestic or Japanese for older used vehicles.

I have a 2008 I bought new. It now has 130k and has only needed an intake manifold gasket. It is an ML63 AMG, but many of the components are the same. My wife now drives it and won't give it up.

Check out Acura's SUVs. Dead reliable and fun to drive. Very classy too.

I have not experienced awful with my higher mileage 2004 ML350 which has been driven 20k miles since purchased.

That said, folks don't make statements like this without a reason.

I would go with speeder's bias before mine. I offer a statistical mass of one car and I have performed zero research. Also the car is a commute vehicle. No stress whatsoever.

The Acura alternative has always been highly rated. I've seen comparisons between the ML and the Acura that say the Acura is all the ML wants to be and more. My cabin next door neighbor drives the Acura and says he'll never change. I don't know anything about the ML personally.

If I could I'd get one of these... (They were never sold new in Aus. Only privately imported cars here so they're astronomically priced!)
I drove a standard one in Hong Kong a few years ago. Truly astounding.

Yes it's "proper" off road but they are the best SUV ever made IMHO.

I remember Nostril Cheese calling the ML the "Alabama Trashcan". It made me laugh.

I don't have much personal experience with them.

I have a 14, last year with the 3.0 bluetec. Love it. Took a trip to Florida to see the parental units, and it just ate the miles. 29 mpg on the way down, low 20s pulling a trailer back. The 13 hour drive was the nicest I've ever done...
