Tobra, you are in California. Is it allowed to use Y'all in California?

And you really should use the plural of y'all which is "all y'all" when asking a question to the entire board of experts.

Clearly up to no good. I'm surprised that they bothered coming back since you have the dog, but maybe they are now casing a neighbor.

I had a much older gentleman knock on my door at 10 or 11 pm on a New Years Eve once. When I opened the door (letting our dog who seems ferocious get her head well out between me and the door), he gave me the whole "I'm trying to pick myself up by selling magazine subscriptions..." routine. Right, late at night on New Years Eve when you think people are probably going to be at parties for the next several hours.

He seemed thoroughly terrified of our dog which was why I gave her a bit more freedom to bark and snarl than usual. I never saw him again.

It sounds like you guys will be fine between the dog and the ability to be a "fine shot" if necessary.

If you have any neighbors that you like or talk to, you may want to pass the picture around and tell them about the situation.

House casing- see your disposition, how many people live here, what's in the background, any dog, etc .etc.

Happened to me several times- I've had kids pull up asking if this was the "manager's" house for the apartments behind us- I asked

"Why would you think this is the manager's house? Go away" Let Weimaraner bark.

I've had a old clearly Mexican guy, in a Dodge Cirrus, with NO PLATES pull up

(said he was on the way to a garage sale, funny I'm in a cul-de-sac and no sales that day) and want to look at my Pontiac and maybe buy it - when asked his name was "Doug Smith" - He asked how much, I quoted just a stupid price ($50K LOL) and he said he'll "think about it" and wanted my cell number-

I offered to call his cell so the caller ID would have my #, and wouldn't you know it- he "Got a new cell and didn't know the number". He walked back to the car, I followed him to the street and stared at him driving away. NO plates on his POS, no nothing- made sure he understood I knew what he was doing.

What a dumbass- thugs are ****ing stupid.

Actually, I read that it was an old Plymouth. Genesis 3:24 states that he drove them out of the garden of Eden in a Fury. However he might have bought the Honda in the New Testament after the Mopar's freeze plugs rusted out.

I know. God will smite me with lightning for this...

The car might be stolen or they may have a warrant. The police or sheriff might be interested depending on how busy they are. Years ago in the middle of the night, I kept hearing a car starting. I finally got out of bed & went to inspect. It was guys going around the neighborhood siphoning gas from people's cars into five gallon cans. I was able to get the license number & made a call to the police. The thanked me & told me the car had been reported stolen.

Good luck. I had a guy likely dealing drugs on my street. Called the cops, my local elected assemblyman, had plate numbers, pics, the address of the neighbor two streets over who was probably buying the drugs. Cops gave me a thousand excuses why it probably wasn't what I thought it was. I guess I must have been mistaken on why you'd drive your car two blocks from your house, to meet some guy who shows up in another car (but doesn't live in this neighborhood), on a darkened street, once every couple weeks, at nighttime, when there's a Starbucks just another block away. Maybe they're just trading scripture when they get together.

Take home story for me: whatever you're doing is not illegal unless you do it out in the open (hint hint: tinted windows in a car a night is safe) and said crime is witnessed by a cop, who may take 45 minutes to an hour to call back (let alone show up) once you've placed that call to dispatch.

Mrs. Noah had a better response logging onto an online neighborhood watch group (Next Door) and posting stuff there of suspicious stuff in the neighborhood. Maybe try that if you've got one in your community to warn other homeowners. That guy of yours, Toby, is up to no good.

Who but somebody casing a house thinks this excuse is a logical reason to head for your side or back yard?

What an idiot... did he think that since he really wanted to look at the car, anyone would be fine with him just going into their back yard? Maybe you were sunbathing and left the phone on the counter in the kitchen, right?

Heh heh. Good job following through with local police.

We have a neighborhood email listserv for sharing stuff like this. Put it out there if you can.

When a shady looking person comes to my door, I walk them back to their car and conspicuously stare at their car tag and jot it down on a piece of paper.

You have the wrong police force. I had some A-hole drive across my front yard and leave deep ruts. There is no way to do that by accident. I called the local police and they sent out a patrolman who took photos and filed a report. His guess was a high school age kid thought a rival lived at my house. I was lucky that no sprinkler heads were damaged.

A week later our trees were tee-peed. I called and the same cop came out within 10 minutes. He filed another report. A week later my door bell rang. The same cop was standing there. He had caught two boys cruising around in the neighborhood acting suspicious. He found out the rumor was some kid living at my house had done something to their high school. He made it clear to them that I don't have any kids and that he was watching them.

I have had no problems since. And those are the biggest incidents we have had. I like it quiet.

Grammatically, either "sounds like to y'all" or "what do all y'all think" would be acceptable.

I get a pass on using y'all because I lived in Texas long enough to pick up the lingo. People ask me where I am from all the time, and when I say "here," they look at me funny.

LOLOLOL

In my neighborhood NextDoor is where all the senior citizens log in and post crazy rants. Common themes include:

"suspicious burglars" dressed as the postman.
"Burglar casing my home, dressed as plumber. Sat in fake 'plumbing and heating van' for a whole hour, pretended to eat lunch."
"Car parked in front of my home. Not my car. Called police non-emergency number."

etc.
