Went to a classic car auction

My son and I went to a classic car auction a couple of weeks ago in PA. Mostly American muscle cars as I was looking for that class of car in particular. They did have one 1987 930 black/black 110K miles. The bidding went to $72,000 reserve not met. I thought that was a good price for a 930 with high miles at a muscle car auction but I guess the seller wanted more. There were some really amazing cars there though.
I bid on several cars but I dropped out when I thought the bidding was too high. The last day of the auction my son says dad I saw a car I really want can we bid on it. It was a 1992 Mustang LX 5.0 convertible with a five speed. We looked it over and it was in excellent shape. Turns out to be a one owner car with 21,000 original miles. So needless to say we came home with a 1992 Mustang for him and nothing for me. But just to spend the weekend with my son seeing all of the beautiful cars and bonding was worth the price of the car.

Very nice find!

How old is your son?

I would recommend you put a roll bar in it if he's a teenager.

He's 19 he is really a very responsible kid. I told him how quickly these cars can get away from you as I had first hand knowledge in 1986 with my brand new Mustang GT doing just that. He has a Infiniti G37 which he put countless hours of work into but he has always been very responsible with that car also.

In 93 my best friend took me along to the Ford dealer when he was having a tough decision deciding between a new Escort GT or the then new Ford Probe. They had a brand new black on black 92 Mustang LX 5.0 coupe for $14,000 that I talked him into.

He had 2 bad wrecks in the Mustang in 2 years and it was eventually written off. It WAS a nice car for a 20 year old...

Nice find but the time spent together sounds like the real treasure. Congrats on the "new" car.

Seems like a lot of car for $13K. I had an '89 LX 5.0 Convertible just like that in a Maroon color (Cabernet) with a tan top and tan cloth interior. Put a set of Pony wheels on it like your son's car has, too. One letdown was the oil pump gave up at 80K miles. It was made out of aluminum, so you might want to research what's in your son's.

First job out of college I bought a new black 85 GT coupe 5sp. Last of the carbureted Mustangs. $15,900 out the door. Only 225HP, so not the demon often seen in the youtube videos. Since there was little to choose from in CA back then, and since it was a stick, everyone thought it was wicked fast on its 14" wheels

As for that LX - that's a beauty. I always liked the 5.0LX - kind of a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Thanks for the positive comments guys. As I said my son is a great kid and we really bond over cars. He is going to school for mechanical engineering on a scholarship that he took care of all on his own. Some here have met him at the shows or Porsche runs. He loves answering questions about my 930 he knows more about it than I do. If you have teenagers you know how hard it is to connect with them and I thought that going to an auction like this would be something he will remember forever but buying this car sealed the deal.
The car truly is a time capsule even had the original cassette player with equalizer in the dash. He really loves it but his older brother thinks he is nuts for wanting a 25 year old car.

Thanks. I had a 1986 GT coupe and I Think I paid about the same as that. I think most of the youtube videos are of the newer generation Mustangs with 600+ HP that people who really have no experience with that kind of power walk into a dealership and plunk down the money and think they can handle it.

Please leave it stock! Most of them have been hashed up or modded (a lot like '60s musclecars) and stockers like this are a refreshing sight. Beautiful car.
