Mr. 914 boy,

Before you go out and get that Porsche crest tattoed on your ass, a little quote from the man F. Porsche himself regarding unbalanced fanatics such as yourself, whom he never understood: "How could anyone limit themselves like that? Have you never wanted to own a Ferrari?" (Slightly paraphrased since it has been many years since I was the young, dumb fanatic soaking up every bit of Porsche history I could get my hands on, including that interview). If you have the nerve to challenge its authenticity AND put some $$ on it, I will dig it up. :)

You have rolled up the wrong alley if you think that you are here to enlighten, little guy.

Very interesting thread, boyz !!

I would not try to create something that doesn't exist but it appears Denis' Porsche quote seems to para-phrase a partial observation from Mr Porsche. Having said that, young mr914 seems to be a bit more "passionate" than many about these cars ( I don't see anything wrong with that).

Hey...opinions run rampant on this board, and quite frankly I like this young mans' energy...so be it, carry-on !!!

Sometimes my Irish temper gets the better of me when I think that someone is FOS, I reread my posts and wince a little. But I hesitate to edit myself after the fact, otherwise I'll never refine my writing skills. ;)

Like I said above, I used to be fairly fanatical about the marque, and once I started digging, the most interesting thing by far was the words of the man himself, F. Porsche. What an amazing character! What a life. I remember being a little surprised by the quote paraphrased above, but not really. I have met a lot of great people in the Porsche world, working at the dealer, on this board, rgruppe and other gatherings, etc. All of the best enthusiasts are interesting people with curious minds and varied interests, the idea of worshipping at the Porsche alter to the exclusion of all of the other great marques is odd to me, and was to Dr. Porsche as well.

How any car nut could not appreciate Ferraris is beyond me, but to each their own, I guess.

fwiw- i enjoy all types of cars, hence the open invitation to them for our runs. To each his , or her, own preference- it was a beautiful day and we had a lot of beautiful cars of all makes with cool people having a good time. As for the Diablos- they are incredible head turners with insane straightline performance. I know; Sepulveda was the scene where the blue SV left me like I was tied to a post!
But to be sure, whenever we have a lot of P cars, the other makes' owners tend to shy away from our desire for some fervent competition

I mean, with Porsche building an SUV, loyalty to the marque is all but finished. Today, while waiting at the Inn, I watched at least 20 Porsches go by without the drivers even acknowledging the massive gathering of Stuttgart hardware in the Inn parking lot. You know what that says to me? It says loyalty to the marque is dead.

Oh my gosh. Look, hopefully when you hit 23, your blind Amiga-esque faith for the badge will have all but been replaced with some more reasonable view on things. (actually I shouldn't talk, I still love the Amiga... :D)

Your idea of loyalty to the marque is built up entirely by your fandom. By being a fan of something, you then emmerse yourself in the culture of that object, whether it be a band or a car.

If your wearing a Van Halen t-shirt and you walk past another person in the street who is wearing a T-Shirt of Eddie Van Halen, and he doesn't react and shake your hand, does that mean that the band has no fans? No I don't think so.

At the moment your surrounded (especially by on this board) by people who love the brand/car/whatever.

Your reaction regarding the SUV is no different to the reaction people gave when the 911 came out (Go read Passion for Porsches, it took him (Jenks) about 8 years before he gave the 911 the thumbs up) and when the 944 and 928 came out.

Not everyone flashes their lights when they go by, but then I have driven past a service station with a guy filling up his SC and he has acknowledged me as I go by.

Porsches are bought for different reasons - brand, style, lifestyle choice or love of the car.

As a matter of fact, I think you will find that 90% of Porsche's sales are to people who couldn't care less about the car and care more about image etc. Its always been this way, it always will be for the last 50 years. Especially with the prime market being the United States.

Its just that you happen to be in one spot looking out at the world from a particular view. Doesn't make your view right. Either does getting upset at a few exotic super cars on this board.

I would think being both loyal and a fan of Porsches would also make you appreciate other manufacturers who are trying to develop excellent sports cars, no matter what the guise. We aren't throwing around pictures of WRX's or RX-7
's here!

Mik911, was that your red carrera following the black Viper with the big wing through the twisties?? I was the fellow behind in the silver C2S....the Viper sounded cool but never really opened up any ground...maybe he was just out for a sunday drive!! I got a little bored and took off for a blast on my own....besides, I needed some potato chips!! later, MAX

Mr9146 01-03-2003 11:21 PM

I guess that you've never heard of family. Owning a Porsche is one thing and one thing only - buying into a culture. You would buy a pair of underwear if it said Porsche on it. If you say that you wouldn't, you'd be lying to yourself.

The gold chain set bought into the culture, and the racers are what sustain that culture. On this board, if you post Lambos and F-cars and any other "exotic," then you're missing the point of owning a Porsche. We - Porsche owners - are the guys that everyone is looking to beat, precisely because we consitently whoop so much @$$. Isn't that somehting to be proud of.

At this point, we've got to get past the pictures being posted - anyone who posts non-porsches is doing it out of spite ... to hit below the belt. The underlying message is pride ... if you missed that, I'm sorry.

Dana_Drury 01-04-2003 04:52 AM

You can have pride, just temper it with a level of reasoning....

No one is denying your passion to the be a Porsche fan, but don't deny people's right to post pictures of semi related material, and material that most of us don't mind seeing.

It's that kind of single minded fanaticism that has started wars and fueled religious feuds for thousands of years! :)

ccandgc 01-04-2003 09:56 AM

I personally dont mind seeing all the nice cars. Living in Hawaii has it pros and cons-one con being there arent any really nice exotic cars around. At least in the magnitude of this event.

:D

Mr9146 01-04-2003 01:49 PM

I'm sick. I'm totally and utterly disgusted. Ya'll still don't seem to get it. Posting pictures of non-Porsches is like inviting the enemy into your home to sit down and have a drink. Sure, you are supposed to keep your friends close and your enemies even closer, but there are some things that just shouldn't be done. This site should be considered hallowed ground and Lambos and F-Cars are the demon spawn of Satan himself ... just a metaphor.

Go ahead and appreciate other makes and whatever, but I still don't see the logic in posting pictures of non-Porsches on a Porsche board. Why must you continually try and subvert our culture? Why is it so important to post those pictures here? It's like you refuse to become members of other forums.

So I drive a 914, so what? It's still a Porsche; you can't argue that. So what if VW helped design the car ... Dr. Porsche created VW. What it all boils down to is that this is a place for Porsches and Porsche-related conversations and questions. Pictures and discussions revolving around other types of cars just don't belong on this board. Please, for the sake of the marque that you claim to hold so dear, take the non-Porsche talk and comments elsewhere.

Mr9146 01-04-2003 01:52 PM

Oh, and I don't plan on starting any wars over this topic. So what if I'm a fanatic? At least I care ...
