What's the psychology behind speeding up when someone passes them? I am pretty aggressive, so when I pass someone up, i am usually gone before they have a chance to catch up slowly unless I am on the open hwy. I often wonder if they feel they are going too slow when someone pass them up so they feel the need to speed up as soon as it happens. I know they aren't looking at the speedo. This is similar to letting your car off the brake at a red light to inch up. THe other person sitting there will do the same thing with red light blazing in front of them but they will let their car roll forward just because the car next to them has done so.

Did the OP say something important? Sorry I was cruising in the left lane staring at my lap, trying to look like I am NOT texting.

Was just cruising along, minding my own business on a 4 lane divided highway. Came up on a moving van in the left lane going 10mph under the speed limit, I assumed it was probably as fast as the rent a truck driver could manage.

The problem was in the right lane was someone in a compact car matching the moving truck's speed. They would both speed up and slow down a few miles and hour, but neither would pass the other. This went on for 10 miles despite me honking and flashing my lights after a few miles.

Was getting several cars backing up in both lanes behind so decided enough was enough. Down shifted, turned on the RIGHT turn signal in the RIGHT lane and proceeded to do a full throttle pass on the shoulder on the right side of the road.

Pulling onto the shoulder was expecting the typical rough gravel surface, but just as the car left the lane the should turned to a paved lane. Quickly past the slow pokes and pulled back into the right lane. Just as the car pulled off the shoulder it changed from paved back into gravel. Thought I was hallucinating!

Didn't know it was there, but the shoulder had been paved to make and entrance/exit for highway work trucks carrying dirt. There were several piles of dirt and gravel off to the side of the highway. Kinda weird as there wasn't any construction in the area.

As the slow pokes faded to tiny dots in the rear view noticed the truck and car moved to the right lane and backed up traffic had started passing them. Must have woken someone up passing them on the shoulder.

Most people are completely oblivious to what ids going on around themselves on a highway. I watch my mirrors for fast traffic, and try to stay out of the way in the right lane. I also almost exclusively use the cruise control. I don't understand why more people don't use this wonderful feature....it keeps you at a constant speed, and with the touch of one button, can either slow down, or speed up, and get better mileage doing it.

When i'm passing someone while on CC, I usually bump it up a coupla MPH, and then resume when I get back into the right lane. Occasionally, someone who is also using cruise very slowly approaches me, and seems to hang next to me. I will slow down in that situation to let them by, I don't want other cars within a couple of car lengths of me (just in case).

Well then yes, I can relate. A red 911 is one of the worst and always a crapshoot. I'm sort of thinking to color change and wrap it in vinyl.

Kind of chuckling though as I recall one time in a city street posted 30 mph, was just poking at 20 while searching for a house number. I overheard someone yelling at me to SLOW down azz****.

In our household, all time best car to fly under the radar was the appliance Maxima sedan in white.

What about the oblivious idiots in the city that keep pace driving beside buses?

Here's a pretty fair representation of my whole day from Santa Fe to Denver yesterday. The guy who wanted to teach everyone a lesson even had a BAW!

That's a familiar looking dash and hood panel there.
