Vent: If you have a line of cars behind you, pull over and let them pass.

It's not rocket science, yet many fail to grasp the concept. I think some people are just oblivious, don't care, or never look in the rear view mirror, habits they should change. Truck drivers, on the other hand, should know better. I can't tell you how many times I've seen a semi, traveling 10 or 20 MPH less than the flow of traffic, with 10 or 20 cars lined up behind them. This is especially bad on narrow two lane roads where you can't safely pass. I don't care what excuse they have (gas mileage, wear & tear on the brakes, whatever), they should find a wide spot on right shoulder, slow and let some cars pass. Do it again on the next wide spot.

/vent off

Yes, and it's the law. In Ohio if you have 5 vehicles behind you, you are required to pull over and let them past. Other states have similar laws.

Is the law enforced? My state has such a law, but it's not enforced.

Unfortunately, most of these laws are only enforced as a way of pulling over suspicious vehicles or passengers.

I'm on I-85 between Gwinnett County into Midtown, twice a day. Every day, it seems like it's every man for themselves. Sickening!

It also always seems to be that some idiot in a huge hurry, is willing to risk my life (and his) by passing on a double yellow line, to run up and hound the car in front of me to try to pass them also.

I don't think it is so much of a problem with slower people as it is a problem with truly impatient/risky drivers, trying to drop 1 minute off thier commute.

There are a bunch of people with the mindset that "I'm traveling at the speed limit so everyone else can piss off"

What they fail to realize that while speeding is obviously a ticket-able offense so is impeding traffic, even traffic that is exceeding the speed limit.

I know someone with the "I'm going fast enough mentality" that got a ticket for impeding.

It was an eye opener for her.

To a certain extend, yes, but for the most part, people just don't care and don't know.

agree with much..
however..
spend a few hrs with a trucker and get back with us..
myself believe it should be mandatory for all drivers..
so he may have slowed you down a bit..

I've had a POV STOP ( locked her brakes) on the Highway in the left lane,
then do U turn in front of me... to the exit they missed..

Yep! And the thought of just continuing to the next available exit to change directions probably never even occurred to her.

corollary to the OP is the driver who holds up the car pool lane by traveling slower than the flow of freeway traffic. Here in Socal, one can only enter and exit the carpool lane at designated areas which means you cannot legally pass a slower vehicle until you reach one of the exit/enter areas. There's nothing like getting behind one of those "I'm doing the legal limit" drivers who is holding the entire lane up as cars in the regular lanes consistently pass on the right. I've been in a line of 15-20 cars that all are at the legal mercy of the oblivious/passive-aggressive driver in front. A real PITA.

I saw it enforced once on I-57 in southern Illinois one Sunday morning. A young woman was cruising in the passing lane. I could see ahead that everyone was passing her on the right. An Illinois patrol car came up behind her and followed her. I hung back in the slow lane to see what was going to happen. After 5 miles or so he lit her up and hit the siren. It scared her so bad she drove halfway off the road. Laughed my but off.

Anybody else feel that trucks should have their own separate lanes with a divider??

Pass on the right. Its where I end up doing the majority of passing on my daily commute to/from NYC. There are generally fewer vehicles in the far right lane. Why is this? My best theory to date is that people avoid the right lane so they don't have to manage speed or change lanes to accommodate vehicles entering and exiting...laziness.

In NJ, I often refer to the far right lane as the passing lane. That clip of the Statey trolling the car in the left lane was shot on Rt. 78 in NJ.
