The more I see/hear him the more I think Gene Hackman....
is massively overrated as an actor.
In particular during times of extreme emotion I feel like he seems to misread the moment. and on the flip side i find myself liking Jack Nicholson more than i had in the past. used to view him as overrated. in effect Hackman and Nicholson have swapped places in my ranking of actors. i fully expect trade magazines and Hollywood insiders to start knocking down my door looking for further insight after this revelation. if any of you are small time Hollywood insiders looking for a boost just let me know and i'll be sure to drop your name during the interviews that are almost certainly coming. that's all i got for now.

Hackman can't hold a candle to Jack Klugman in terms of poor acting prowess.

I first saw him in The Poseidon Adventure. I was really young and his character had a real effect on me.
Mad preacher that blamed everything on God. I don't know why but that thought stayed with me for a long time. I think like a lot of Hollywood greats he's getting old. Maybe he should retire? Here he is just before he croaked it. ![]()

He has to be mid 80's now, he is old!
Get shorty, The Firm, Unforgiven, Enemy of the State, Wyatt Earp, The Conversation, French Connection... I think he's great. |

Mandy Patinkin, the actor from Criminal Minds, and Homeland, just walked out of Criminal Minds one day and never came back. ABC thought about suing him for breach on contract, but let it go. He needed his lines written on large poster board behind the camera while he "acted".

I haven't seen all of the movies he's been in ... but I've seen many. Can't think of any that I didn't enjoy.
Unforgiven is a real standout.

Speaking of old farts, Jon Voight is killing it on Ray Donovan. I liked Robert Duvall, especially in The Apostle.

I see a lot of older actors playing roles that are essentially the same character, with different names and stories. They start to just be caricatures of themselves, and it gets a bit boring. I've often wondered if that's boring for the actors too. Clint Eastwood, Nicholson, and Pacino is the worst... I haven't been able to enjoy a Pacino movie since "Scent of a woman"
It seems like they get to a point where the roles are written for the actors, with a boilerplate performance. Maybe someone in the 'biz would have more insight

Hackman has retired. Along with Sean Connery.
The trick to acting is to make it seem like you are not acting. Harrison Ford in Apocylspe Now fumbled with some papers during a scene, where the assistant director got mad at him. Coppola told the assistant he's acting. John Wayne only played one role in his life and that was being John Wayne.

Duval, Ford, Gary Oldham, Johnny Depp are good at subsuming their persona's. In other words becoming their character. Meryl Streep...is fantastic at it. You sometimes wonder if she has a personality. Peter Sellers... another one.
