I've been listening to Carolla for 15 years. He's gotten further right over the years, but more so he's just stale lately. He's more libertarian than republican.

Yeah I listened to the radio show on KLSX and then the podcast for about 10 years but you're right about things getting more stale. It's also fairly long and my drive to/from work is short.

Stale or not, I wouldn't mind having the creativity and business acumen to put together what he's done.

I still give him props for his his motorsports and car hobby cred, without a doubt, but let's not start making him into something he's not.

 I responded to the guy who says He Sucks at what he does. Clearly there are house painters who wish they were as successful as that opinionated carpenter who people like to listen to. ...an opinionated carpenter who can swing buying a 4.4million$ 935. The man has a large audience, in this ever fracturing media time.

BTW, I would also say that Bill Maher is in the same boat. He says all sorts of things I don't agree with. But he, like Carolla, is his own man, pushing forward his POV, political correctness be damned.

sammyg2 08-25-2016 06:56 AM

He stands out from the rest because he doesn't have a huge BIAS showing for the entire world to see.
IOW what he has to say is significantly closer to the truth than that from his peers.

He could also buy and sell "non-DB's" and not give it a second thought.
Pot meet kettle.

Perhaps we could just applaud the fact that there's a guy out there who's enthusiastic about 935s and has the money and the will to buy one, maintain it, drive it, and (most likely) record the experience and share it with people.

sugarwood 08-25-2016 07:22 AM

How can he afford it?
He's 52 years old.
He's been in the entertainment industry for 3 decades.
He has invested well.
He has never been divorced.

sugarwood 08-25-2016 07:24 AM

It was a price he could not refuse.

Quote:

The estimate for this rare bird was between $4.5 and $5.5 million, which Carolla readily admits he doesn’t have — but he does have a lot of collateral, which he’ll likely have to liquidate (including his Miura SV). And the 935 is a one of one car, with serious provenance. Carolla reasoned that it would likely never come up for auction again, and if it did, it would probably cost about $10 million more.

So Carolla wanted to be there, just in case the car went for something less than what he thought it was worth. And once it was on the block, the car went up to $4 million in the blink of an eye. At $4.4 Carolla put it all out there, only to have a phone bidder jump on $4.5. But then it turned out that the person on the phone was working multiple auctions and made a mistake. So Carolla got his Holy Grail.

And just in case you thought Carolla would store this baby away for the $15 million dollar sale down the road, think again. “I will drive that car at Laguna Seca next year,” said Carolla.

I'm curious what has happened to PLN's personal collection. Shortly after his death I recall reading that his family was going to auction off his cars for charity but I don't recall them ever coming to market. I know his older Volvettes have surfaced, but I'd be interested to see what else he had at the time of his passing.

This Toyota Collora guy seems like a piece of work:

Quote:

The lesson you learned from a sexual harassment seminar was "Don't hire chicks." Do you hate working with women?

No. But they make you hire a certain number of chicks, and they're always the least funny on the writing staff. The reason why you know more funny dudes than funny chicks is that dudes are funnier than chicks. If my daughter has a mediocre sense of humor, I'm just gonna tell her, "Be a staff writer for a sitcom. Because they'll have to hire you, they can't really fire you, and you don't have to produce that much. It'll be awesome."

The "are women funny" debate has grown very contentious. You're not worried about reactions to this?

I don't care. When you're picking a basketball team, you'll take the brother over the guy with the yarmulke. Why? Because you're playing the odds. When it comes to comedy, of course there's Sarah Silverman, Tina Fey, Kathy Griffin — super-funny chicks. But if you're playing the odds? No. If Joy Behar or Sherri Shepherd was a dude, they'd be off TV. They're not funny enough for dudes. What if Roseanne Barr was a dude? Think we'd know who she was? Honestly.

Tobra 08-25-2016 08:08 AM

I think it is amusing that people presume to know a person by listening to their acts. This guy seems to speak his mind, buys cool old cars and drives them

I said it before on a Top Gear thread a few months ago but it's a shame Carolla wasn't the main host on Top Gear America. His character role could be like an American version of Jeremy Clarkson.

Check out this interview with Tanner Faust. Recalling a previous road trip conversation. At about 3 min in...."I can only talk about a 912 for so long... Now let's get back to the Miuras." Funny.

Nailed it, once again.

Mahler9th 08-25-2016 08:57 AM

I am pretty sure that PLN never owned that 935. I am pretty sure it is featured in the film "Porsche 935: Moby and the Warhorse Gang." PLN is interviewed in that film. Its available on DVD.

Its about the Garrettson-Barbour team that raced out of Mountain View back in the day. Lots of history.

Absolutely. And I give him major props for being a car guy, just not a fan of listening to him. :)

Since I haven't painted a house in about a decade, you're a little behind on my details. Not that there is anything wrong w painting houses, (or anything else), as long as you are good at it. And I was very good at it. :)

I sort of believe that there is dignity in work. What do you do? Do you work for a living?
