That's great.

Thanks for the link.

I'm not familiar with him. Is he a member of the Toyota family for whom their compact car is named?

island911 08-24-2016 04:04 PM

LOL. No, that would be a damn corolla. ;)

It said in the article he would have to "liquidate some assets" which means he was a tad short of money. I hope he has the money to afford to run that thing such as transportation to the track, support from mechanics that know how to baby an engine and running gear that might be blindingly fast but also very delicate.

As an example back when I was racing the 914-6, total support from someone like Wayne Baker or Jim Patrick was about $5000 per weekend and that was just for a 914 vintage car. We had a Porsche 944 GTR that raced with us, one of the last Porsche Trans Am cars that was driven by Elliot Forbes Robinson and the owner had a factory trained mechanic with him and it cost him about $10,000 a weekend more or less.

He already races a bunch of Newman cars and he hangs out with Canepa and Leno, so I think he knows what he's getting into.

He bought a Newman turbo Z car in England so he could run Goodwood this year.

I don't think he's hurting to bad.

speeder 08-24-2016 07:06 PM

Didn't know he had that kind of money, good for him. That seems like a lot for that car but then, the world has gone crazy. Asset-wise, he just took a gamble that it will remain crazy in the foreseeable future. :)

Radio morning talk guy on KROQ (pretty decent), Man Show host (cancelled long ago), mixed drink peddler and big podcaster, but still - how did he amass such cash?

Great purchase tho!

speeder 08-24-2016 07:19 PM

I know, it's kind of a head-scratcher.

gorthar 08-24-2016 07:33 PM

He's also written several books.

Tobra 08-24-2016 07:36 PM

Nice thing about it is the thing won't be in a museum, he will run it hard on a track

You're kidding. Or perhaps, you are simply at odds with his political positions - which he articulates very well. Whatever, it is clear, he's smart enough to position to pay 4.4million for a piece of history.

Since you bring it up, I think the opposite is true. You think he's good at what he does because you like his politics, not for any objective or informed view of his profession. You probably think that several other right-wing hacks are actually good journalists because they say what you're thinking.

I still give him props for his his motorsports and car hobby cred, without a doubt, but let's not start making him into something he's not.

He admitted he needs to sell some other toys to put all the cash together. But he was making $1mil per year back in the late 90's, and then more when he had his own morning show for a few years. He was also the first guy to really monetize podcasting, so he's done alright for himself.

I've been listening to Carolla for 15 years. He's gotten further right over the years, but more so he's just stale lately. He's more libertarian than republican.

speeder 08-25-2016 04:09 AM

He's probably a fantastic businessman.
