The so-called "new Canadian" drivers can & often are a bit of a problem here. I do wonder if this is a product of the fact they were not raised in a car culture. They are & seem to be oblivious to many of the common subtleties & courtesies of diving in traffic of which most of us are aware of & have grown up with. Some good points being raised here. I do like the idea of more advanced driving techniques being taught to folks before the are granted a driver's licence. Left lane hogs should be an important focal point for law enforcement types rather than wasting time & resources on some of the more candy-a$$ed transgressions.

Cheers
JB

I have a theory that our highway system could probably be pretty efficient if used properly.

One proposal from some magazine years ago would give skill ratings to drivers. Only the highest rated drivers could use certain roads at certain speeds. (Of course, all of us here would be amongst the highest rated drivers!)

Couldn't we employ hookers to give our driving lessons while wearing closed toe heels?

Here in jersey we have a "keep right pass left law". If LEO catches you lingering left you will be ticketed. I live near the Delaware water gap and have seen many PA drivers ticketed for not yielding the left lane.

That bit about headlights in the mirror after you pass is what I learned, too. For cars, I wait until I can see both headlights in the rear-view mirror. For big trucks, I wait another vehicle width or so.

I do not want to make any claims about my own driving, but I discovered and read the British book 'Road Craft' when I was a teenager, and it definitely informed my driving habits in a positive way. Helps my cycling habits, too.

I'm a LIGHT FLASHING, HORN BEEPING Ahole. If you see me coming down the highway and blocking my way watch out!
I don't care if your 5 cars in front of me. I'm an Offensive driver. Hit your BRAKES if I ride your "A" and I can stop better than you can, but you will NOT like my reply. Want to make a sticker
" Get Your Head Out of Your "A" and Drive"

I said it before Most people can operate a car, but CAN'T Drive a Car?

Big Difference!

Get the "F" out of my way or you'll pay!!

NC for my money is the has the poorest drivers.
I've only driven in 43 of the contiguous states so there may be worse, but even in other states it's likely to be a vehicle with NC plates. Massachusetts is second, but NC edges even them.

Weed tourism here has led to all time highs when it comes to bad driving. The blazoids drive wherever they want.

Issue every driver a paintball gun and 20 rounds of ammo every month. The paint is only removable by a top secret formula solvent kept at State Patrol offices. Once you car has more than a couple of paint splatters on it, the State Patrol can pull you over and take your license, which will only be returned after you visit one of their offices and pass a test, at which time they will wash the paint spots off of your car. Individual drivers have full discretion in their use of their paint balls - you can tag the opposition one at a time, or go full auto and empty the magazine at anyone who truly deserves it. You don't get more ammo until the next month, though, so discretion is advised.

I've driven in 31 US states as well as most of Europe, and I have to say that the driving standards on I4 in Florida have to be amongst the lowest I have witnessed anywhere. Undertaking is rife often into almost non-existent gaps such that the perpetrators probably think they are on the Daytona raceway, left lane hogging is frequent, mobile phone use hand held is commonplace.

Some drivers just do not care about the rules of the road.

I spotted a lady yesterday merging onto the highway and traveled all the way to the left lane and decided to cruise at 65 in a 70.

She also was using a space saver for one of the rear tires:rolleyes:

I think most drivers in NC were originally from NY, MA and NJ :)

Keep in mind too that the only power most people have is to irritate other people. Plays a large part in how many Americans drive. Can't compete and get ahead at your job? Then compete in your car out on the freeway. No power over your life? Go out and sit in the left lane and do 60 and refuse to yield. "How do you like me now?" running through their peanut brains.

"Look at me!" is another motivator for bad driving of the wreckless, high-speed kind, weaving through traffic. Lots of "F__ You" in there with it.

I think everyone who paints with a really wide brush should have their licences taken away :)
