In a moral sense, yes it's a big problem.

In a religious sense no of course not. Buddhists and Confucians don't have gods (I think) you know. Plenty of religions don't. But nearly all have a beneficial moral purpose. And I'm sure the majority or agnostics and athiests have a correctly aligned moral compass. That seems to be lacking in a lot of places lately....and your response to this shows it. Ha-ha indeed.

You can develop a moral compass in people without organized religion or a belief in a higher power. I did it with my kids. They are both independent, smart, care for others, know right from wrong. They learned by watching their parents treat others with respect, having a sense of purpose and right and wrong. It just isn't that difficult but does require consistency, love, attention and discipline. I grew up catholic and saw a lot more wrong than right with that system, its bad actors, the structure that protected them.......in the end a ton of hypocrites telling others how to live a moral life. Too many give that responsibility over to others.

So true. I was baptized Catholic. My grandmother made me a baptist and we went to Sunday school, regular church services, Sunday night socials, Wednesday night socials and had to endure Summer Bible School. And I got baptized again. My Mom tried to make a Methodist out of me....by then it was too late.

By the time I was 12 or 14 I had had my fill of organized religion.

But I learned right from wrong at an early age from nearly every one of my elders....the religion had nothing to with it.

My mom is a Lutheran now. I don't quite understand it but I know enough to respect anyone who has religious convictions. Some people want and need faith. Others need to get over that fact. The denigration of Christianity in our country is a big problem IMO- the lack of respect is palpable and that's what disturbed me about the post.

Live and let live for crying out loud. The only disrespect should be meted to those who obviously didn't know right from wrong. The way Tabs or anyone else worded their post or their faith in a religious or any other "god" as a guiding purpose or force in living a moral life is immaterial. And it sure as kaka isn't something to laugh at.

Exactly, it comes down to a person's character or lack thereof. There are good and honest people who are deeply religious and others who are not religious at all. My mom is very influenced by her Catholocism and is an extremely moral person. My dad was basically an atheist, (also raised Catholic, interestingly), and he had a strong sense of right and wrong. A code, if you will, that made it completely out of the question to steal from or cheat someone.

I'm influenced by both and not religious at all but respect other's beliefs and faith, more so when it seems to influence them to be better people. While far from saintly or perfect, I believe that I have a strong moral compass and like to help others when I can and at least not harm them the rest of the time.

Bizarre posts are the norm from Mr. Tabs but this line of thought is bananas, IMO. The notion that human beings are becoming less moral is silly. Cavemen were probably selling each other phony life insurance policies and banging their neighbors' wives. Crime and treachery are as old as the hills. :cool:
