To fence or not to fence...will it jazz the neighbor?
Fall is in the air here in CT, this week at least, and it's got me thinking about leaf clean-up.
I cleaned my leaves last year, yard was the image of the perfect last fall clean-up, (the kind all my neighbors pay $400+ for) short cut grass, beds all tidy, everything trimmed...despite being a millennial, I take great pride in caring for the house I own ![]() Less than 24 hours after completion, this image began to dwindle, quickly, as the next door neighbor's Oak leaves began blowing into my yard. He's only got 13 large Oaks, is positioned N of me, and the wind blows N to S down the street all winter. Oh yea, his idea of cleaning leaves is plowing them around with his Craftsman tractor until it set on fire last year...then, no more clean-up. So, putting up a silt fence on the grass-line of our properties shouldn't be taken that negatively, right?

I'd put up a fence, and if they get pissed because they can't clean their yard by letting the wind blow the leaves from their trees into someone else's yard (yours) screw em.

You will be surprised how ineffective a fence is against leaves. And you will still have a pile of leaves on both sides of the fence.

And a solid fence will not let the wind through so then not only was would you have leaves to cleanup, but also a bunch of busted fire wood

My suggestion is that you not waste one more minute thinking that you can somehow control "where the leaves blow."
LOL!

Why rake the leaves? They decompose!!! Nothing better to do?

Oak leaves are small enough that they will get through the fence. I think it probably will mitigate the problem somewhat though. Have you talked to your neighbor about the issue?

Can't leaves laying here, or they will smother everything...got all types, includng Pin Oaks, Oaks, Maples, etc. Forget a fence, and raking....get thee a big azz backpack blower...one that blows harder than Trump and HRC combined...pick any brand...so long as it's a Stihl
. Take a look at what the pros use...and drop some coin...500+.

Wear good ear protection with the leaf blower. Oak leaves will kill a lot of plants.

Of course. He doesn't understand why people clean their yards, mow their grass, mulch their beds...the year we just bought and were renovating/not living here the neighbor across the street actually came over and cleaned his leaves bc he was sick of them ending up in his yard. He had to "teach" the guy how to clean leaves.
He's a nurse at Yale, hopefully for the well being of his patients, voluntarily incompetent. His approach to yard maintenance is mowing the grass to the dirt, once every 6 weeks, unless it's dry out, then takes longer to grow back.

G'day!

A fence that allows airflow (such as chain link) would certainly help. But in addition for this to work....it wouldn't hurt if through dialog you and your neighbor could reach an agreement whereby he is a little more proactive on the situation - such as hiring a local service to rake up the leaves throughout the season they drop.
It can be a touchy situation - many of us have gone through - albeit other issues. Tact is the key. And also the realization that in some cases the neighbor will never do anything to help and it will all be on your plate.
