New driveway

All:

Just about finished with the new driveway. Used to look like this:

Now looks like this:

Contractor put down 15" of base rock under the pavers and added a heating system for the winter. If you are thinking of replacing your driveway, I strongly suggest you consider pavers- they look great and I'm sure add value to the property.

Cheers,

Paul.

Fantastic Job, looks great.

My parents house has a brick drive like that. They bought the house directly across the street from the model homes at the entrance of their development. The builders did all the external upgrades on theirs that they did on the models so the enterance was symmetrical. Brick driveways look very classy, really improves the look of the property.

You must be proud of that.

That looks fantastic. I'm glad I live in a climate where I don't need one but a heated driveway sounds cool. Do they just stay dry all winter? How is it controlled?

I agree! It looks great by the way...
The great thing about pavers is that they are completely recyclable.
If you ever have problems with heaving or movement they can always be lifted, the base repaired and reinstalled.
Now, if I may be so bold as to suggest that the house needs windows on the front left to balance the right side...

My bad, I should have shown the whole front of the house. Here you go;

I sent a picture of the house to an architect friend of mine when we first bought it. His response: "Wow, whoever designed that was thinking!" I guess it's called a 'double reversed arch'.

Cheers,

Paul.

Ahh, much better!
I put down 15000 lbs of pavers in one day by myself....
I was suppose to play hockey that night but couldn't close my hands around the stick.

That looks nice! The contractor did a nice job! (But you paid for it) I like the heating element, should help to moderate the freeze, thaw, heaving cycle. Nice base. Great design and layout. Good thinking! Nice home!

Hate to say it, but no way I could afford it. But it looks real good.

How much for just the materials? I'd like to do something like that one day. It looks great, and you don't have the cracking problem of regular concrete.

All:

Here is a 'during' photo so you can see how it was done:

Pretty self- explanatory, but here goes:

-Remove old driveway and go down 15".

-Add 1/4" minus rock and compact.

-Pin down edging strips.

-Add sand and screed using 2" PVC pipe.

-Lay pavers. (start at the curb and make up the difference at the house/garage). Make sure they are tight against one another.

-Mark edges and cut with a concrete saw.

-Lay edging pavers.

-Compact the whole thing.

-Add horrendously expensive polymer-mix sand to seal the cracks and prevent weeds from growing in the gaps.

-Rinse off.

-Stand back and enjoy.

NOTE: Use barricades to prevent your friends from parking their oil-leaking cars on your new driveway.

I'm not sure how the total cost was broken down, but I used to install these many years ago, and it's not that difficult if you take your time. I have seen classes advertised at home shows- so you can DIY. The guy who did mine also goes down to CA to do this- if you need more info, PM me and we can talk.

Cheers,

Paul.

At a depth of 15 inches for the base he used almost 42 cubic yards of aggregate or about 30 tons. Probably close to $50 ton delivered. Tumbled concrete pavers run about 3.50 a square foot. All told the material cost was in the neighborhood of $5000. So count on spending at least $5 per square foot if you DIY. Not including tool rental, labor, chiropractor etc.

JHC:

Sounds about right. Tumbling is extra, we didn't have that done.

I think about $2k of the total was the retaining wall.

Paul.

Looks great Paul! Very nice! I remember when we did ours. We were the first house in the hood to have them. We had 21 pallets of them delivered. We did the driveway (99' X 14') and all the walkways front and back yard with them. I know every one of them by name. (did it myself)
Old picture. Sorry.

Paul,
They did a great job on your driveway and I think you got a pretty good deal considering the heating wiring and retaining wall.
BTW how are you liking the FJ cruiser. I am looking to replace my Touraeg sometime soon.

Thanks! As for the FJ- I like it. I miss a lot of the creature comforts my old ride had ('00 Range Rover) but I love the fact that it hasn't had to go to the shop for major repairs! I have done a few upgrades- but it's a great truck right out of the box. There's a lot of info here;

http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forums/

Go test drive one- they're fun!

Cheers,

Paul.
