Wiring Relay for my Garage Ventilation Fan?
I put a vent fan in my garage that I want to turn on with the garage door opener and stay on for as long as the light is lit. So I thought I'd just tap into the light socket wires and connect to my fan,,, But that might be too much load for that circuit board.
I need to find a relay, and I looked on ebay, but don't know what I'm looking at. ![]() So if I have 110 volt going in to activate the relay, and 110 volt going in as supply, then 110 volt going out to fan. Sounds simple to me, but I just don't know which relay will work. Any advice or ideas? Thanks,

How many amps is the breaker rated at? How much does the fan pull? You may be overthinking this....

This is rated for 30 amps, but use a 15 amp breaker. Last edited by DanielDudley; 09-19-2016 at 12:59 AM.. |

Oops, wait.... Now what if the fan is already on running when I hit the garage door opener?
Like for the summer, I want to put a temperature sensor switch thermostat. So, if the fan is already on, from another switched source, and then the garage door circuit turns on too, will there be too much voltage? or will the fan only use what it needs? Or do I need a different, or additional relay? I know this is turning into a science project, but it might be fun.

Thermostat pulls in one relay, opener pulls in the other relay. The contacts from either relay run the fan.
Personally I would put it on a timer.

Why not just get one of the temp/humidity operated fans? Are you hoping to vent exhaust gasses or something? I doubt the 5 minutes your garage light is on will be sufficient time to exchange the air.

run 120 off the garage door opener to a small relay.
get a 24v transformer put your Tstat on a low voltage transformer. run 24v to both contacts of the 2 transformers then to the contactor for the fan. (the contacts of the relays will be in parallel) now both relays can be energized at the same time.

What is the power consumption of the fan?

Can you share what fan you plan on using?

Sounds like what you want is a switch to sense when the garage door is open and have a period of run time after it is closed.
Sounds like you would also like a switch in the space to cycle the fan. Example micro switch https://www.amazon.com/Uxcell-a11021800ux0120-Switch-Straight-Action/dp/B0050HKB8O/ref=pd_lpo_328_lp_img_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=Y7GAGDYT9KRCEGMV66AB A small multi purpose relay would handle that load easily. Relay 110/120 VAC Coil Voltage PR341 Mars Relay 90341 [PR341] If you want it to remain on for a period of time after the door closes, an inexpensive delay on break relay would keep the fan energized for a given amount of time. Delay on Break Timer Time Delay Relays - Littelfuse The end switch on the door and the wall switch would be wired in parallel to energize the delay on break timer. The delay on break timer would then energize the fan relay to start your ventilation fan. Components for this would be available at any HVAC parts store.
