We're OK, lots of smoke and the Sheriffs came by and said be ready to leave. Its apparently out, not sure at this point if it was on or adjacent to my 18 acres. I'm really stupid to live in such a place. I was home and got the RV ready to go. Thanks for the concern.

I-5 at the Calgrove exit, Newhall, CA. I have about 1,400 feet of my property that borders the I-5 on the downside of a big hill. Every few years someone overheats coming over the hill and they either catch on fire, or overheat and pull over and smoke a butt while they wait for the vehicle to cool off.
It doesn't happen every year, but every 3-4 years. A smallish brush fire when LA County fire isn't stressed with other bigger fires is a good thing. I'm also butt up against about 1,000 acres of state wildlands. Interesting tidbit, when the water dropping helicopters come in, they get their water from the Disney Golden Oak Ranch a few miles away. I also work for the Mouse, and the asst. Ranch Manager is my Son. He makes sure I'm covered. He's even offered to bring in a 10,000 gallon water tanker and fire pump if needed, which I can tie into my 20,000 gallon swimming pool. He says if the freeway is open he can be here in 15-20 minutes. Sweeeet! In reality, I know my house will burn to the ground some day, whether I'm living here or not is the question. I'm well fire insured and if I'm home, my wife and I know what to get out of the house, that is valuable to us. Original artwork, family heirlooms, etc.

Hugh - With all the fires nearby, I'm surprised there is anything left to burn? Stay safe brother....

Can you have a generator, pump and sprinklers/fire hose pulling from your pool?. Seems like 20K gallons could make the area within 100 feet of your house thoroughly soaked?. Maybe that's ridiculous. Have you looked into it?
Edit: 20,000 gal over a circular area of 100 foot radius is 0.6 gal/sq ft. Industrial sprinkler is 150 gpm for 75 ft radius, you could use three such in a triangle centered on the house. 3 x 150 x 60 = 27,000 gal/hour. You could empty that pool in < 1 hour. http://www.nelsonirrigation.com/products/family/big-gun-sprinklers/big-gun-applications/ 75 series costs $685/each Plus maybe $1,000/each for pump/motor.

You don't have cedar shingles on top of your house do you? Maybe put some sprinklers on your roof if you do.

Terra cotta roof and wood siding. A fire pump is a nice idea but I have hundreds of mature oak trees, not sure how many. If a fire gets into the oak tree canopy, I can't do anything about it. I maintain brush and grass clearance to 200'. Like I said, I'm very well fire insured. I'm not going to do firefighting. I saw a nearby house ignite from radiant heat that was 50' away. I don't need to ignite from radiant heat. I'm getting the eff out.
