smog cert in CA for 72 needed to register with DMV?
Just got my 72 painted and interior is getting put back together. I need to get it register. Is a smog cert needed? I am under the impression that the car must have smog cert. for the first registration as it change hands?

If you're asking this question, I hope you just recently moved to California.

No, not needed. The easiest thing to do is go to one of those places that take care of all the DMV standing in line, paper work and other such silly stuff. I use on in Chula Vista that is run by an old Mexican fellow and he has 6 women who are close to super models and wear VERY short skirts or yoga pants at worm! When I did my HHR and transferred the handicap plates from my F350 it cost me $25 and took them about 1 1/2 hours.
The lady at the front desk said I could come back but I said I would wait since the scenery was so beautiful....she just giggled! |

If you are going to the DMV go online or call ahead and make an appointment.
Better yet if you have AAA they can do the registration for you.

You live in Los Angeles so the Auto Club can do it all for you, hassle-free. I have found that not all Auto Club areas are the same and, for example, Auto Club of Northern California will not do out of state car registrations or motorcycles. Unless your 72 is grey market or not originally manufactured for sale in the US, it is exempt from smog certification.

Thank you gentlemen. I know about AAA and will do just that later today, but I need to go that place John frequents just to have the girls help me. Its worth the two hour drive. I know about the 74 or older cars being smog exempted (that's why I bought this car) and great to know among cert is not need to transfer title.

You will have to pay taxes on the value of the car unless it is a inter family transfer. I would suggest the seller is your cousin or step brother or ETC. No taxes that way!

John, tax is ok, we all hate to pay it, but I just don't want to go back to jail again.
