Anybody In Shanghai

While browsing the net I came across this:

Mr. Cen’s Hand-Hammered Wok | Grace Young

This sort of hand made stuff intrigues me, and I would like to get one of these WOKS before they disappear. They are about 100 to 150 RMB..or about $15 to $22. So if anybody is in Shanghai, I would appreciate if you would look the Cen brothers up and purchase a couple of their WOKs for me. I will gladly pay for them and the shipping to the USA.

They are in the Zhabei district.

Cen Rong Gen's woks
214 Baoyuan Lu, near Baotong Lu
宝源路214号, 近宝通路

They apparently are still in business, but for how much longer?

motion 10-02-2016 04:25 AM

It can take several hours to get from one area of Shanghai to another... It's a HUGE city.

Can't you buy them on Ebay?

dewolf 10-02-2016 04:28 AM

Another pair of draggin azz jeans is it?

Hey Shaun I have someone else who is interested in getting one of those WOKs.

GH85Carrera 10-03-2016 02:14 PM

Tabs, do you have the best selling book, 101 ways to wok your dog?

Shaun @ Tru6 10-03-2016 02:35 PM

Ted, do you have the store's telephone #? Can you find it?

No I dont, But people on line who have had it say it does not work. Nobody picks up or is disconnected.

The map and the address is what I have.

Shaun @ Tru6 10-04-2016 05:21 PM

Here's the scoop.

They have three sizes.

36cm-rmb150 ($23)
40cm-rmb250($39)
45cm-rmb300($46)

If anyone wants one, now is the time.

motion 10-04-2016 05:25 PM

Wow, Shaun, very nice of you to put this together for Tabs and others. I have a feeling that you don't know what you're in for :)

I'll take a medium!

Shaun @ Tru6 10-04-2016 05:34 PM

Entirely my pleasure. And we should do something nice for my friend Aaron in Shanghai.

Shipping, wire transfer fee and customs will add to the final price. I will probably get a 36 and a 45.

tabs 10-04-2016 10:10 PM

I will take one of each. 36,40 and 46...for $148.00 plus shipping etc...

How do you want to proceed?

The guy who contacted me about wanting one lives in Australia. Also let me contact a Chinese gal that I know. Maybe?

And I agree it is very kind of you Shaun.

atcjorg 10-04-2016 11:06 PM

I would like a 36 and 45 also
Thank you very much!

MBAtarga 10-05-2016 07:06 AM

I just picked up one of these at my local Goodwill for $2!

tabs 10-05-2016 11:41 AM

Ok I am in for 2 36's a 40 and a 45. The Chinese gal wants a small.

Now what I need to know is wire transfer fees shipping and customs cost...to figure unit cost. Then with that figure I may bump my order?

Shaun @ Tru6 10-05-2016 04:45 PM

Hello Gentlemen. I have to place an order tomorrow so if you want a wok, please email me at shaun@tru-6.com with what size you want.

I want to stress that while everyone who expressed interest/commitment in this thread will get one, I can't guarantee everyone who sends me an email will get one. We are at about 10 woks and my friend has let me know he now has to take his car vs. the metro to get them. Not really a happy camper.

Lastly, getting one of these woks has both a coolness factor as well as quality; they are definitely something special. But when all is said and done, they may not be the deal of the century. Just a great wok. My sense is it's this wok here:

Artisan Hammered Carbon Steel Round Bottom Wok with Ring | Williams-Sonoma

When you try to order one, it says it's available to ship on November 4.

These are heavy and will go by UPS Air so shipping won't be $10. Customs will be very low I think. And then there is shipping from me to you.

It will all add up fast. Please consider that. I'm still in for 2, in part for the story. How often do you get a chance at authenticity.

motion 10-05-2016 04:58 PM

Any sort of rough idea what it will ultimately cost to arrive to each pelican?

Shaun @ Tru6 10-05-2016 05:13 PM

My best guess is landed cost here is $50 + purchase price each.

Both UPS and FedEx are outrageously expensive.

motion 10-05-2016 05:20 PM

The Chinese get some type of crazy break on shipping to US via Post Office, yes? I ordered a complete motorcycle bodywork kit a few years ago. Showed up in a HUGE box, and it was something like $150 shipping.

Shaun @ Tru6 10-05-2016 06:21 PM

Good to know, I asked Aaron Richard.

Tomorrow is the order day as it's the last day of a long holiday and my friend won't be able to get them after that.

Email sent: Copy below

OK I will take 2 Smalls, 1 Medium and 1 Large.

This should be 23 + 23 + 39 + 46 = $131

then prorate shipping to you at say $50. Then with 4 WOKs to me at $25 USPS or Fed ex ground as I estimate 4 Woks will weight apx 20 lbs. So I estimate about $180

Now how do I know the weight..I bought one of the WS 14's as insurance on Saturday, which I have 30 days to return. So it is 4 lbs. The big one is going to be really big...family size.

BTW the WS (Cen) one is really really nice, and you can tell it is handmade..Condider that WS is now saying Nov 4 for shipping, that means they sell out of them quick or do not have a large stock of them at any one time. ZOOO

Lets do it...this is once in a life time.

These are not crappy Woks, they are symmetrical and they are handmade. They do come covered in a light film of oil which will have to cleaned before seasoning...You can see why they are so highly touted.

red-beard 10-05-2016 07:19 PM

Why use UPS? Use ChinaPost.

Shaun @ Tru6 10-06-2016 07:31 AM

Only you have emailed me. So that's that.

motion 10-06-2016 07:34 AM

I sent you an email a couple hours ago.

There in lies the rub.
