Hurricane Matthew update....

Everyone ready for hurricane Matthew?

The SC Gov ordered an evacuation of the coast this afternoon and I-26 will be one direction headed west starting at 3 PM tomorrow. We're not that close to the coast but we have the Wando river across the street from us and we are in a flood zone. We'll have to see what the tidal surge does.

Coming home just now, there were lines at all the gas stations.

Felt kinda weird and something was in the air.

We'll leave tomorrow or maybe Thursday morning.

What about everyone else?

I'm inland a hundred miles, so I'm just going to work OT everyday, so you'll have some chicken to eat when you get here.

Got a place on HHI that is surrounded by 150 year old live oaks. I can't get to it before the evacuations start so I am tapping into friends already down there to help batten down a few hatches. (Patio furniture, etc.) Unfortunately, they are almost all over the age of 70 and can't do too much. The latest models showed it staying farther offshore than they did late yesterday. Hoping that trend continues, but I think this will be bad.

There were long lines to get gas and some stations ran out last night.

Seems most people I talk to are staying home.

Traffic this morning was a breeze.

We have a guy working in Charleston. We told him to just come home, he's not going to get much done anyway. He said there are problems getting gas, but he'll be OK.

I'm hoping for some good storm swell and good surfing conditions (and that the wind and rain stay far enough away!) Best wishes to all who are being affected more directly!

That site is great!

I usually use NOAA (many of Mike's images link to NOAA) since I refuse to support the The Global Warming Weather Channel.

Thanks!

You're welcome. The URL is kind of strange [url=http://www.spaghettimodels dot com], but it sure is a tasty site.

Why not just go to the site that he takes most or all of his images from?
National Hurricane Center
Click on the hurricane of interest, and all of the actual scientific data is right there.

Be wary of more than just the tidal surge on the coastal areas, it sounds like this storm has a history of heavy 20"-30" rainfalls, and that could flood anywhere.

My sister-in-law lives in the West Palm Beach area and last I heard, she is staying put. That doesn't seem like a good plan.

No telling how bad this will be for coastal residents.

Best case scenario is just a wind event....along with some heavy rains.

But you know what?

No matter what the wind and rain amounts are, it will mean different things to different people depending entirely on their particular situation. Those with a lot of exposure have greater potential for damage.

I'm 2 blocks from the Atlantic and 1 block from the Intercoastal Waterway 1 story block home built in '62 and I'm sitting up high and dry on a natural dune ridge. I'm very confident I will be fine.

But......there are homes within' a block radius who (because of their particulars) have a higher level of exposure.

We'll see what happens but I'm not that worried right now.

Some computer models are showing the storm not making direct landfall, and many people are now talking about staying put. I don't think the evacuation order is "mandatory".
