chevy cruze diesel

Looking at having to commute about 80 miles/day. Is there a consensus yea or nay on these cars?

Also interested as an eventual TDI replacement. So far I am not impressed - sedan / automatic only. I need a hatchback with a stick!

Why not an older VW TDI?

I like new safety equipment - a 2008 or older is quiet a bit more bare bones - plus high miles, usually!

besides the super sensitive steering with minimum feedback, the Cruze is a nice car. i think a diesel rig would be kinda sweet..

just dont sneeze while changing lanes..when your eyes open, it's anybodys guess where you are.

Do you want a diesel? do you think it will be more efficient based on 80 miles/day?

Might run a comparison here: https://www.fueleconomy.gov/ and compare your choice and some alternatives. You can personalize it for how you drive, how far per year, city/highway etc. It also takes into consideration fuel prices (near me, diesel is more than regular)

I assume Chevy uses a Urea tank for emissions, so that will need refills every 10K miles or so... I think the cruze is a good looking car. VW sold many diesels (up to 25% of sales) here in the US. I like to think their dealer network was comfortable working on them. Not sure the sales numbers of Cruze diesels would support widespread dealer knowledge.

Thanks for the link. I'll take a look at it.

I lost my TDI sportwagon to my ex-wife in our divorce. I really enjoyed driving that car but it's an hour to get it fixed from here but there is a Chevy dealer right here in town. In the end, I hang on to cars longer than I should so thought a diesel would be good for longevity. I will need it to start at -20F and be reliable. The commute is 2 lanes the entire distance so 55-60 mph should lend itself to 50mpg as well and obviously it would get up to operating temp each day.

Essentially, I thought if most things were similar or equal, it could make sense.

truck pumps in your area

Asking prices are ~$13K for 50-60K miles to ~16.5$ for 25K miles.

I too, or actually my wife has, a 2015 TDI SEL Golf, we just took a 1,100 mile trip with it and it averaged 50 mpg for the trip. That's with a half day of city driving through Berkeley and some the next day in Danville. At about $2.50 a gallon. VW can buy it back and it looks like they will offer $28K for it or give us 6-7k and fix it. I called Chevy today and they told me the company isn't making Cruz diesels and haven't for awhile. They have pickups in diesel. That's all. VW says they aren't making a diesel in 2017 or 2018.
I am guessing we will take the fix and the money, there isn't any thing cheaper than a Mercedes that I have found in diesel. VW also said if the car doesn't get as good mileage after the fix they will make up the difference.

There is a 2012 Mercedes E-350 with the diesel Blutech engine for sale at the Mercedes dealer near
My house for $19,000. If my wife hadn't just bought a different 2012 E-350 she would have been all over it. I'm sorely tempted and I don't need it. Supposedly its 35+ on the highway. It might make a good alternative to the Cruze you're considering. We absolutely love my wife's car.

I can't get my wife to buy a used car, I have tried for years, a one year old car with a better warranty than new and not chance. I try.
But then I won't buy a new car for myself. My attention span is only good for a couple years, buying new for me is a waste.
As for the Cruze, like I said, they don't make a diesel anymore so that's out for her.
There is a very good chance we will just keep her Golf and take the money.

Cruze diesel due back for 2017. Chevy prepping 'whisper quiet' Cruze Diesel - Autoblog . I'd feel best about FWD in the winter around here in the great white north.

There were not that many made relative to overall Cruze production. For that reason, it could be a bit of a gamble but would also not feel too bad about putting a lot of salted winter road miles on the car as it is still a chevy cruze.

As an aside, yesterday I saw about 40 TDI VW cars sitting on a back lot in Osseo,WI waiting for pick up. I presumed they were all there because there is no VW dealer for 25 miles and so could not be a poor reflection on the brand dealership. Pretty sad end for some really nice cars.

Diesel is about the same everywhere in the U.S. this summer, (other than small differences due to state taxes). The big difference is in gasoline prices, which are much cheaper in the rest of the country compared to CA.

It was about $1.00 a gallon difference earlier this summer but prices seem to finally be coming down some in SoCal.

I have been paying about $2.50 a gallon from San Diego all the way to Berkeley. Our fill up in Berkeley was $2.53. A few months ago I was paying $2.20.

Thats 20K miles per year, in the UK that would be a rock solid case for a diesel, and we pay about $6.32 an Imperial gallon.
