Neat picture. I'm surprised that the car is tuned such that bottoming the suspension in a corner so that one can scrape the bottom is possible.

Amazing picture, thanks for posting.

That is the view the non-Mercs wil see the rest of the race.

The last couple of laps of quali were a pretty good back and forth right down to the wire between the two Merc drivers. They were setting new track records and really pushing hard!

Apparently the track redid the curbing in some of the corners, causing damage to a few cars through out the weekend.
It will be interesting to see how they play into the race.

Cheers Richard

I attended a suspension seminar where they said the F1 cars had, at max, 10mm of suspension travel - counting sidewall flex.
The different angles of the 'a' arms alone looks greater than 10mm!
Myth Busted?

The kerbs are higher than 10mm so that speaker must have been referring to normal deflection due to pitch/roll/aerodynamic downforce. When they jump a kerb (which is what I think we are seeing the result of here) they will have way more than that. This still seems like a lot. I didn't think they had enough clearance in the driveshaft to brake cooling, heim joints, etc. to have that much travel.

I guess this is why so many parts are falling off this weekend.

Not following how a dynamic situation can cause the car exceed the physical (mechanical) limitations of the suspension.
Agreed that's why P3 saw so many detached parts. (turn 9?)

Try running your car over a speed bump at 100 mph, you will see. They clearly have more than 10mm of travel built into the clearances, and the spring rates are soft enough that dynamic loads from bumps will allow that much deflection, even if the cornering and braking forces only move it 10mm in normal situations (since the cg is so low and the wheelbase so long).

How long ago? The suspensions have changed drastically in the last few years.

Red Bull use a lot of rear suspension travel, with a very high rake angle that really tilts the car even further up under braking for higher drag/downforce. Under accel, the rear sits a lot flatter/lower.

Over the past three years, the cars have been getting more and more suspension movement as the engineers are able to calculate aerodynamics in the different chassis moments. Before, they wanted a non moving platform to keep the static aerodynamic form of the car in check. Now modern computing power let them create dynamic aerodynamics that use suspension movement to advantage. There is a lot more motion from the top teams, Red Bull, Mercedes, Ferrari.

Great picture - you can just feel the grip and torque, must be quite a sensation to be in the seat. Awesome.

Fascinating thing to me is that the left rear is mashed to its suspension limit and significantly distorted from the lateral load. Three of the tires have lots of positive camber and the right front is making minimal contact with the surface. But the left front is flat and planted. Guess that is where the trust in the system comes in because it looks to me like the car is 'this' close to letting go and flying off to the weeds.
Brilliant
