Anyone here participated in a Ferrari f355 belt change??

Trying to decide if I should decline the invitation to be on the home garage team belt swap

I'd be the most senior guy there and I've never been involved in one before .

Should I be afraid?

Why? Ferrari or not, an engine is an engine. There's nothing mystical about it.

I think what you're asking is whether we think you should take the lead on an engine-out Ferrari service?

If so, yes. Can be fun and a total pain in the ass.

As long as it isn't tying up your garage space or tools then go for it.

I guess my biggest fear is leaving them with a garage and a Ferrari in dissaray.

Is it just hours or complication and complexity ??

How bad can it be?

You can:
-Let everyone know you've got other commitments past x time but wanted to come to show moral support.
-Show up in clothes that can't get dirty. That will relegate you to keeping the refreshments served and lots of free advice.
-Suck it up and dive in with a commitment since you may need help in the future.

If the dealer estimates 60 hours that means it is going to either 20 (or 120 if you don't know what you are doing). The problem usually comes in when an unexpected part breaks or you find out you need specialty tool # O-I-C-U-ATE-1-2 and everything comes to a grinding halt.

P.S. be sure to take pics since it is a rare thing for a Ferrari to break down.

Are you having the water pump rebuilt while you're in there?

I understand. Just commenting that a Ferrari being up on a lift is a common thing...

I had dinner with the manager of a Ferrari dealership once: His best story of the night:

A Doc buys a new Ferrari, but doesn't want his wife to know what service costs are. After inquiring about the cost of a belt change, Manager sees the car down the road a a local run-down "Foreign car repair shop".......

2 days later, that shop calls and asks him if the engine comes out from above or below. To screw with them, he replied: "Doesn't matter, you can do it either way".......Later, car is towed in to have it done right.....

Does anyone in the group know how it's done? If not, I know I wouldn't want to be the one leading the charge on someone else's Ferrari.

Got a Bentley manual for it? Hey, someone had to ask!

Ask over at Ferrarichat.com. They all work on their cars.

As long as you can all get along while doing the work. A few of those DIY car shows have done the belt change. It looks like a nightmare.
I can see lots of swearing in your future.

Do it...

Years ago I helped my neighbor do a clutch job on his Tetarossa. Hilarious!

I say go for it...many have done it and one of my novice car buds did the timing belt on his Testarossa a few years ago when they were $45k cars and he could't justify paying Ferrari of Denver $8k for this service. He was successful and very proud too (as he should be).

Actually there's a group of guys on there who do. Super knowledgeable.

If you're not familiar with the f355 belt job, I'd certainly not try and figure it out. It's going to require belts, tensioners, numerous other little bits. I think it's around $1500 or so...just for the parts. Go for Hill Engineering tensioners. You'll want to replace or rebuild water pump while you're in there. Setting cam timing is....well....critical. are you that confident? I've rebuilt engines...bit even that scared me. The idea of grenading an engine didn't sound like fun.

I think I paid 8k for the full service, with photo documentation from one of the best shops in socal. Could I have done it? Most likely. ...but if he plans to sell the car, I guarantee you, it'll be much harder to sell without the work documented from a well known shop. Ferrari buyers....worst ever.
