Daylight Savings Time

We go back one hour on Sunday. However, being raised in Hawaii, we never observed the process of DST. Is DST an antiquated remnant of times gone by? Do we really need it?

I think would split the difference. Set the clocks 30 minutes back, then just leave them there.

Roll the minutes back, roll them forward. It's all clock work, doesn't limit what gets done in a day.

That is a stupid comment.

Do the same big business get cheated out of an hour every spring?

I love DST and changing the clocks. It moves my work and play time to have the most sunshine.

One more reason to love HI... or AZ. AZ doesn't deal with it either.

I'm going to say prolly

I'm from Arizona so it doesn't effect me either way. Clock stays the same. Amount of day light changes. If we wanna get it correct we should just all go to Zulu...

Yes, it's antiquated.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daylight_saving_time
Quote:
New Zealander George Hudson proposed the idea of daylight saving in 1895.[2] The German Empire and Austria-Hungary organized the first nationwide implementation, starting on April 30, 1916. Many countries have used it at various times since then, particularly since the energy crisis of the 1970s.

The practice has both advocates and critics.[1] Putting clocks forward benefits retailing, sports, and other activities that exploit sunlight after working hours,[3] but can cause problems for outdoor entertainment and other activities tied to sunlight, such as farming.[4][5] Though some early proponents of DST aimed to reduce evening use of incandescent lighting—once a primary use of electricity[6]—today's heating and cooling usage patterns differ greatly, and research about how DST affects energy use is limited and contradictory.[7]
Personally, I'd love to go to permanent DST. We are already in DST for 8 months of the year, I think it should absorb the other 4 months. I prefer the extra daylight at the end of the day rather than the beginning.

However, the argument against has been about the poor lil kiddies who would be going to school in the dark.(deemed not safe) Arguably because schools are too inflexible to slide their start times fwd 1 hour. (crazy)

Imagine being an hour early for everything? What a feeling of control! (or frustration)

Which doesn't sound that valid to me since I believe elementary, vs middle school vs high school often have 2 hours difference between the earliest and latest start times. And If you live up north, I suspect there are plenty of kids that either go to school in the dark or get home in the dark in the depth of winter.

I start driving to work at 0530 weekdays and I see many school buses on the road. They stop and after several minutes I see kids stumbling slowly towards the bus. Pitch dark, and no adults to be seen. Crazy.

I like the quote:

"Only the government would cut a foot off a blanket, sew it on the other end, and think they have a longer blanket"

Daylight doesn't change, why do we change the clocks?

I've always "loved" the farmer argument; like a farmer is going to check the clock and say "well, even though the sun is coming up, I can't head out into the field until x time."

Of course you could argue that some/most cities have hours when contractors can make noise and in the summer they want to start early to avoid the heat. Of course that could be a simple ordinance change saying something like work can begin at sunrise rather than saying 7:00am.

Until recently in Indiana we didn't observe it. I love it now but the argument against always came from the farmers. "But the cows wont give milk on time".
