Exclamation A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck central New Zealand

YIKES!

WELLINGTON, Nov 14 (Reuters) - A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck central New Zealand just after midnight, the U.S. Geological Survey said, causing widespread damage and generating a tsunami.

Thousands of people along New Zealand's east coast fled their homes to head for higher ground as emergency services warned of destructive waves of up to five metres (yards) in some areas.

It was a big long shake here in Wellington! No damage to our place but a lot of broken glass and stuff falling off shelves in town.
Biggest threat was a tsunami warning, I suspect bill Douglas spent the night in the car as he is right by the beach.
A couple of fatalities being reported closer to the centre of the quake.
Hope all the South Island members are safe.

Cheers
Reuben

Hi Reuben and Pelicans. Bill Douglas reporting in fit and well. Pleased you are OK Reuben I hope things are OK at Powerhaus too.

Phew. Lots of things fell off shelves and some scaffolding fell over and hit the 911 - but everyone around here is fine. LOL the dogs enjoyed it. Friends on a hill above the beach called and got us +dogs and cats to join them. I had to push really hard against the aquarium to stop it tipping over. Luckily the aftershocks weren't enough to tip the aquarium over while I was sheltering up the hill.

Glad you all are okay and here's hoping there aren't any tsunamis coming your way as a result of this. 7.8 is nothing to scoff at! Stay safe!

Well, I'm glad you won the struggle with the aquarium. That could have been nasty.
