6.5 Creedmoor

Anybody shooting it? What are your thoughts?

'm considering the 6.5 CM Ruger Precision with some good glass.

My buddy just bought one. I've seen and played with it. He's waiting on glass. I'll shoot it Sunday. Initial impressions: Wow I like it.

What does this animal do that a .308 doesn't?

What are your plans for it? If it's just going to be a plinker or a "fun gun", there are cheaper options that you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between in actual use.

The 6.5 Creedmoor is an outstanding medium to long range target round. 6.5's tend to have very fast twists, meant to stabilize very heavy for caliber bullets. Their resultant high ballistic coefficients result in less wind drift at long range, and therefore less sight correction to score hits. But, unless you are competing, the real world difference between it and the more common, and far cheaper, .308 or .223 is pretty well moot. Unless you are missing out on scoring "possibles" at 600 yards prone due to missed wind calls, you really don't need this thing.

Of course there is always just the plain old "fun factor" of having something relatively unique. If you already own similar rifles in more common (cheaper) calibers, this could be a fun addition. If you don't, then don't start with this one. The same rifle in .308 will be far cheaper to shoot, just as accurate, and every bit as capable in most peoples' hands.

I love 6.5's. Shot my first deer with a sporterized '98 Mauser in the old 6.5 Swede. My oldest son's first deer rifle, given to him on his 12th Christmas, is a Model 70 in 6.5 Swede. My current favorite deer rifle is my Ruger #1 in 6.5 Swede, on the far left in the photo below. The Creedmoor is no more than a modernized Swede, based on the .308 or .243 case. Everything good about the old Swede is still good about the Creedmoor. To get the best out of either, and to shoot them economically, it's best to hand load for them. If you don't want to do that, just go with the .308.

Jeff - funny you bring up the 6.5 Swede. Buddy I was shooting with yesterday brought his 1900's(ish) 6.5 Swede Carbine. Very accurate and sweet shooter. I had my old Mosin there as well. My shoulder hurts this morning!

This is just a hobby for me. I have a safe full of a wide variety of weapons but nothing that is hyper accurate. I'm sure I could do just fine with a less expensive gun or caliber, but the RPR in 6.5 CM has caught my eye.

Well, there you go then. I have a safe full of pretty "useless" rifles that are all just great good fun to play with. If it caught your eye, then go for it. By all indications, it's a fantastic rifle in a fantastic caliber. Should be all kinds of fun.

6.5 x 55 Swede is one of those great "why didn't i know this before" rounds. So nice. I like 257 roberts as well.

My first deer rifle was a .257 Roberts built on a Japanese Arisaka action. Still have it, still a great rifle and an excellent "Western" caliber. It's taken many a Mulie and pronghorn when I still lived in southeastern Montana.

Just saw this beast on Gun Joker today:
CUSTOM LONG RANGE RIFLE

I am sure the reserve is off the charts, but would be interesting to see where it ends up.
It's definitely several steps above the Ruger (Surgeon action, Kreiger barrel, etc.), and even comes with decent glass. Might be worth keeping an eye on it.

EDIT: Looks like the seller just added a buy-now of $4200. I guess that answers that!

Yikes! It is looking like availability of the RPR is thin right now from retailers. Jackers have them at a $200 premium on GB, but I don't want it that much. Looking at other options.

Check out the Ruger Hawkeye Varmint Target. I have one in 308 and it is a damn nice rifle. It doesn't have the "look" of the RPR, but it's a better quality rifle, IMHO. It uses the indestructible M77 action, where the RPR is based on the Ruger American.

I have yet to shoot my 308, but a good buddy has the 6.5c and shot .5 MOA with several loads his first time out with it. He's confident he could do better with some load development.

After a bit more reading, I ordered a Savage 10 BA in 6.5. Buds had a smokin deal on it. Glass will be Vortex Viper 6-24x50. Now I need to find the broad side of a barn.

I've heard folks suggest that it may be easier if I stand inside...

Find one that is square as well - that way all 4 sides will have same dimensions and be equally broad.
