Bob,

No advice here, just well wishes from a Pelican friend you've helped in the past.

One day at a time for the truly addicted is really one minute at a time. The fight for them never ends. But in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

You are a good man, KC.

Ha! Reminds me of a conversation I had with my doc when I joined his practice.

"Are you a smoker?"
"Yes"
"How heavy?"
"I haven't had one in 36 years."
"Ah. OK. I get it"
Big grin.

Six days now w/o. I have not "quit" because I am skeered to say that. I just ain't drinking today.

One of my customers just brought me a giant bag of various Christmas ales, including Bad Elf and Very Bad Elf. Big honkin' bottles. The very definition of real beers.

They are in my fridge. They are laughing at me. They just called me the P-word.

My son is going to get an early Christmas present.

More than one way to skin a feardy-puss doncha know...I like it

"I might get drunk as a skunk tomorrow, but I just ain't drinkin' today!"

Put that on a tee shirt and wear that sucker everyday for the rest of your life....it'll reek, but the net result will be fantastic

Keep on keepin' on Bob....

Yep. I don't intend to have a drink today. Can't say about tomorrow, but I know I can make it to bed time without taking a drink. And that's today's definition of success.

Great job Bob.

That is exactly how I explained it to my wife

To all, what a wonderful, heart felt thread.

Bob, thanks for starting this. I have learned a great deal from the exchange of information: Bet you have as well!

Probably this... Your history does not suggest alcoholism to me. Not necessarily. But dry alcoholics are and endless resource if you're looking for temperance lectures.

I love having a drink at the end of the day. For exactly the reasons you describe. It's the comforting ritual. I'm frequently on call or have reading to do so a cup of tea replaces a glass of wine or a cocktail without missing a beat. Two drinks a night after work does not make you an alcoholic. Your family history is reason for concern, but your alcohol consumption perhaps not so much.

Umm, what works for me... If I eat something sweet, something full of sugar, I DO NOT want alcohol. Yuk, couldn't think of anything worse. You could try a couple of candy bars at about the time when you would normally feel like a drink.

I may have a minor addiction to carbs and alcohol is the easiest and fun-ist way of getting carbs. It may be worth a try.

GF is into that sort of thing. And ridiculously sweet desert wines - yuck. Not me. I just drink pinot noirs or occassionally a beer.
