He uses a piece of string for the pendulum bearing. Is that common? It looks out of place.

I've read everything that I could find about this thing over the past couple of years. Anytime a new article pops up, I read it. I think that would be spectacular if he builds one.

Watching a few more videos I think his mill is not CNC, just has a digital read-out. I still suspect he has more than $25k invested in tools. His lathe and mill would cost more than $25k.

Here he's hand-making hand cut files using mild steel and case hardening them. including a separate video on the case hardening process.

Founder of the company I work for designed and built a clock totally from wood that ran on compressed air. It was on the wall in his office. He also had a display case of the wooden model prototypes of most of his designs. Most were fully functional despite being made from wood.

When working in the graphic arts department helped him make large photo prints to use as posters for trade shows. His dark room was in his basement. In order for the enlarger to work we cut a trap door in a closet so the top of the enlarger could extend far enough to make the large prints. We also designed and built a large photo processor to automatically develop the huge prints. He was happy that for the number of posters we made, our time and the materials including making the processor, etc. we still saved money compared to having the prints done professionally. He talked about wanting to build an airplane powered by steam but never got around to doing it.
