Meh...I build those all the time with my Harbor Freight corded hand drill and angle grinder! It takes a weekend. :D

Seriously...WOW! That was really cool!

billybek 12-16-2016 08:19 AM

I could have watched that for 1000 hours.
Thanks for posting it.

He does a extremely good job explaining the processes in his individual vids.

Good Lord.

Who has that sort of time?

Amazing craftsman.

sc_rufctr 12-16-2016 07:11 PM

Excellent stuff. I envy anyone who has the time to do stuff like this.

Here's one of his smaller projects. "Clickspring: Milling a Fire Piston"

onewhippedpuppy 12-16-2016 07:27 PM

Incredible!

porsche4life 12-16-2016 08:02 PM

Astounding. Amazing attention to detail there.

rusnak 12-16-2016 08:36 PM

Every gear, even the spring and key to wind it made by hand. Unbelievable dedication.

sc_rufctr 12-17-2016 12:40 AM

What sort of money would something like this cost?

I believe that the craftsman in question answers that in one of the vids info sections ....A ME professor

It is very cool that he is using 19thC methodologies. ( lots of sawing and filing )

Norm K 12-17-2016 04:30 AM

A thousand hours using CAD and machines: Now I'm even more impressed by the craftsmen of the olden days than I used to be.

Charles Freeborn 12-17-2016 07:51 AM

Wow. Just wow....

masraum 12-17-2016 08:54 AM

Wow! Amazing. Thanks for posting the video of the bluing. I can see what I'll be doing over the Christmas holidays. Watching the rest of his videos. This may actually be better than watching the project Binky videos.

masraum 12-17-2016 08:57 AM

"Every now and then, there's a need to form a precise square hole, and often the quickest and easiest solution is to simply use needle files"

^ Right. That's how I always do it.

masraum 12-17-2016 12:03 PM

OK, I'm pretty sure, with all of the fancy equipment his videos and some guidance, I could make my own screw.

<iframe width="853" height="480" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5sAw4Q1PM8Y" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

But what I shudder to think about is the act of making several identical screws.

rusnak 12-17-2016 12:21 PM

Even the screwdriver looks hand made.

He uses a piece of string for the pendulum bearing. Is that common? It looks out of place.

19:59 in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3ZGlpDa-0g

motion 12-17-2016 06:16 PM

Just unbelievable. Its so heartwarming to see what extremely skilled humans are capable of.

That video linked is only 12:32 long? Didn't see anything about pendulum bearing mentioned in it.

MBAtarga 12-17-2016 07:16 PM

So how much investment do you think he has in his shop tools? I'm thinking $25k

Bad typing 10:59 (the 9 is next to the 0 and it's dark in here):)

sc_rufctr 12-18-2016 05:52 AM

I've spent entirely too much time on his You Tube channel.

Time to go out and do something ;)

rusnak 12-18-2016 05:58 PM

I've read everything that I could find about this thing over the past couple of years. Anytime a new article pops up, I read it. I think that would be spectacular if he builds one.

MBAtarga 12-18-2016 06:38 PM

I don't doubt the guys skills at replicating the Antikythera mechanism. I think I've already seen where someone had made a computer model.

masraum 12-20-2016 05:16 PM

I keep going back to these videos. Pure pornography.

Man, I wish I had the money and time.

rusnak 12-21-2016 05:51 PM

My head hurts just thinking about how he made this.

Way more than that...his cnc machine is worth more than that. Without tooling.

Watching a few more videos I think his mill is not CNC, just has a digital read-out. I still suspect he has more than $25k invested in tools.

His lathe and mill would cost more than $25k.

LWJ 12-22-2016 08:05 AM

Just sent to my 80 yr old Dad. He is a ME and a machine tool junkie. I bet he watches this 3 times!
Thanks!

masraum 07-12-2017 07:59 PM

I haven't watched any of the Antikythera stuff since the preview and I finished the clock build.

Here he's hand-making hand cut files using mild steel and case hardening them.

<iframe width="853" height="480" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/SOw9WqMOHjA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

including a separate video on the case hardening process.

Thanks for the update. I really like this guy because he holds nothing back. He gives us all of the information.

pwd72s 07-13-2017 12:07 AM

Just..wow!

shadowjack1 07-13-2017 04:56 AM

Thank you very much.

Founder of the company I work for designed and built a clock totally from wood that ran on compressed air. It was on the wall in his office. He also had a display case of the wooden model prototypes of most of his designs. Most were fully functional despite being made from wood.

When working in the graphic arts department helped him make large photo prints to use as posters for trade shows. His dark room was in his basement. In order for the enlarger to work we cut a trap door in a closet so the top of the enlarger could extend far enough to make the large prints. We also designed and built a large photo processor to automatically develop the huge prints. He was happy that for the number of posters we made, our time and the materials including making the processor, etc. we still saved money compared to having the prints done professionally.

He talked about wanting to build an airplane powered by steam but never got around to doing it.
