First deer of the season!

Got this about 6:30 tonight on my first night out hunting this season! 20yd. heart shot with my bow. He went all of 50 yds.

Congratulations. How many can you take in New York? Here in Washington, "first deer of the season" = "last deer of the season". We only get one. The rest are divided up between the "Native Americans" (who have no qualms about using the white man's modern arms and pickup trucks) and the poachers. One in the same, actually...

Jeff, Here in NY where I live, you can get 5 deer. Two bucks, and three does. I normally take between 3-4 as that is all we can eat in a year.

I hunt in a '4 deer' county here in OH. Thats right, you can kill 4 deer, and yes, all bucks if you're lucky enough. Venison is not hard to come by in OH.

EDIT. What I wrote above it not accurate. If you hunt all seasons, the maximum you can take is 6. However, only 1 can be a buck. Thanks to Cabmando for pointing it out.

Yep I was wondering about your allowed take too Von.
Was thinking that you had probably put in some time practicing, then wham first night out its over for the season.

Sounds that there are lots of deer in parts of the country, so plenty of tags to be had.

Do you notice a difference in the meat from a doe compared to bucks?

View of my backyard....this was taken I think last year. The "herd" comes through almost nightly - in groups as large as 7 at a time, but normally 3 or 4.

Many years ago I was in Jeanette PA on a business trip.
I had about 2 weeks worth of work to do and was eager to get it done and come home.
One morning I showed up at the plant and it was M-T.
No one was there but the security guard and as few white-hats (bosses).

I said, WTF?
Guard said it was opening day of deer season, most of the employees called in sick.
They closed the plant down for deer hunting. Unbelievable.

in Kalifornia I could count on one hand the number of people I know who have ever been deer hunting.

I could take down a few with a slingshot from my back porch here in Kirkwood MO.

They don't even bother to get up while laying in my yard when I pull up at night.

Almost domesticated and need to learn how to avoid cars. See a few dead on the roads daily.

Appears we need to thin the herd but was just reading about Wasting disease.

Many counties in MO are requiring testing prior to processing.

WOW! 2 bucks? Lucky!!!! 3 deer county in NW OH and I can only take one antlered deer statewide.
As it turns out this thread helped a fellow hunter. I had read a comment saying you could take 5 bucks in Ohio. I was fairly certain that we were a 1 Buck state regardless of the zone you live in. I checked the regulations and was able to PM the member the section from the ODNR rules stating that one buck can be harvested. Our laws are weird in that in certain zones you can buy an antlerless permit whereas in other zones all you can buy are either sex permits. The either sex permit can be used to harvest one buck where the remaining can only be used for antlerless deer. It always helps to make sure you check the hunting regulations within your state to make sure you're complying. I make sure to check every year because it seems like they change the rules for the number of deer you can take within a given zone around here.

My son has been out with the bow four times: Lots of youngsters but nothing that makes sense harvesting.

He said he fell asleep in one of the stands yesterday morning and an owl, attempting to landing on a branch not three feet from his head, woke him up: He said both he and the owl screamed.

Surprised the owl even woke him up...they seem to fly with nary a sound...amazing predators. Had one swoop in on me as I was standing in the woods the other day and land just a few feet away before he spotted me and vamoosed....no screams

Another one perched 20' or so behind me a few years ago for at least 30 minutes watching me fish...and then release 'em. He didn't understand....

I had something similar happen once. I was in my stand early in the morning. I hadn't slept well the night before. I got up in my stand, hooked in my harness (hope your son was wearing one too!) and dozed off a bit. I woke to a quick gust as an owl flying along the creek went by. No screams but it did keep me awake the rest of the morning.
Another time I had 2 owls flying above me while I was rabbit hunting and in a fairly thick area. They must have been letting me play dog for them.

I hunted about 8 days here in CA and no luck. You can take 2 deer but unless you draw a premium tag in one of the good zones or you hunt private land, it is not easy to be successful. It is all still hunting or spot and stalk. Not big enough population for stand hunting on public land. The drought definitely has done a number on the deer heard and the lions are also doing their job.

On a positive note, bear population is up and even though they banned hound hunting in 2013, I was able to take a nice bruin still hunting in the wilderness. If only it hadn't been 3000 feet climb to the trail head.
