Anyone Live Next to a Weekend Vacation Rental

Our neighborhood is changing.....We have 6 homes out in the woods, each with between 3 and 5 acres. All original owners till lately. 2 homes recently sold and 2 more on the market next summer.

The one behind me was bought by 3 families from the "city" (ahem)......I want to be a good neighbor, so offer to plow snow for free when they come over. They tell me they will loan it out to friends on some weekends (the deception starts).......

Well, just a few months later, it's a full blown vacation rental. I plowed in the dark last night when I got in from a cold day of snowmobiling in temps of the mid teens. 7 Freeking cars parked over there So far, it's been quiet, but what am I in for on the long haul? Yapping dogs, loud dirt bikes, screaming kids? Anyone with stories?

Here is their ad:

I would start charging them for snowplowing based on it being a bnb. If they are too close the noise could bother you. Is your property fenced? Sorry to hear about this. No personal experience with bnb but just what I have heard....

Owners are nice, they offer to pay, but then I'd be obligated to a schedule. Sometimes, I'm gone or on call with the county part time and not around.

Fenced, yes.

No experience. I'm sure you looked into zoning, etc.

Frankly, your area is so nice I am surprised it took this long.

Edit: After looking through all the photos, that place is perfect for a weekend with friends and family. I'd rent it in a second, especially given the location in relation to the really cool places you took me.

Nope - let them plow their own snow, otherwise you're just subsidizing their business (which is exactly what this is) and making it easier for asshats to get to the party cabin.

You're screwed in the summer, though.

Could go either way. The people behind my place turned their one room "cabana" into a ABnB with the rules for two people only unless approved in advance. Seems they approved every frat, pool, student, drunken group pool party every weekend this last summer, plus they rent it for photo shoots. They are breaking several laws and codes but surprisingly the city of LA doesn't seem to care.
They are home when the first guest arrives then leave and come back at 10-11 to kick all the drunks out into the neighborhood.
The owners straight up do't care and have told us to pound sand.
Hope your situation turns out better, I would hope that all that space between you would help

^^ yes, I realy like the mix of stone and wood in the house.

Our neighborhood on Kauai has shifted to lots of Vaca rentals.
Mostly a lot of blissed out folks that are really happy to be there, wandering around with big smiles on their faces. I've met some very interesting visitors hanging on the beach there in the hood. Better than a cranky permanent neighbor stinking up the vibe permanatly. It will probably be empty most of the winter = peace and quite.

Occasionally a large rowdy group will show up, but they are gone in a week or so.

Cheers Richsrd

Ps. Bob are we going to get some stories and pics hopefully of your recent Tahiti trip?

No pressure Bob, I just thought that with this arctic blast arriving for a lot of pelicans, a little tropical relief would be welcome.

My family has rented houses in in Richards "hood" (cracks me up you would call your slice of paradise the hood ) and yes mostly nature lovers and family's (matter of fact most of the rowdies were the locals)

I would think after looking at the rental and your area you will be getting the same type of folks i.e. hikers, nature lovers, etc.

What would something like that trade for?

Don't subsidized their business.

Sorry it happened in your hood.

Hey Scott,
Haena even has a ghetto. There is a side road just past the Colony Resort, on the Mauka side of the road. It's lined with about ten rental places. And for years was affectionately known as the ghetto. It was one of the few affordable neighborhoods in the area.
It was kind of an inside joke. Even the folks living there at the time called it that.

I think you are right about the sort of clients the place next to Bob's will attract.

Cheers Richard

We lived in this place for 11 years (middle unit) up until 8 months ago.

The neighbors on the end/corner unit started doing AirBNB a couple years ago. This place is 10-15 minutes from NYC, 600ft from the PATH subway system, so is an alternative to crazy priced hotels in Manhattan. The owners were $hitty neighbors, so unsurprisingly were $hitty innkeepers too. Biggest issue for us was trash. Stupid neighbors obviously didn't leave any instructions for guests so we'd often come home to our trash cans (not the neighbors) crammed full of NYC shopping detritus. The endless comings and goings of tourists up that front stoop and dragging their luggage up and down the stairs (3rd floor walk up) also got old.

There are worse things than living next to an AirB&B. At least the owners are solvent and will be keeping the house in tip top shape.
For plowing, since its mixed with personal use, you might not be a "true" neighbor.
Either take the contract or don't do anything, and good fences make good neighbors.
Bring something nice if they ever invite you over.

According to the listing that house is on 3 acres, even if one of the renters was an asshat would it actually impact you very much? Very different proposition than the condo on the other side of your wall being air bnb or something like that.

As far as plowing, I would continue to do it as long as its clearly something you do on a best effort basis to be neighborly... that way there can be no complaint if you're out of town or otherwise can't do it in a timely manner, yet you have a clear social expectation with the owners that you're going out of your way to be a generous neighbor and they should (hopefully) in turn go out of their way to be good to you if there is ever any issue with a renter etc.

+1 to those saying that place looks nice, i may have to grab a few buddies and visit your neck of the woods one of these weekends...

You can put on a Santa hat and go check out the new renters. Maybe it'll be like the movies.

I value your opinions and comments. I feel better.

I figure if a rowdy group keeps me awake - I'm up at first light with either the chain saw or a little target practice with the .308....

If any come and rent, the drinks are on me.......

LWJ - I think the sales price was $469K at the end.....Asking was $495K.
