I hit the requisite floor, then the door close. Once each. Even if people are headed towards it...

Maybe the button didn't work because your elevator doesn't go to the top floor? (Sorry, it was too good to pass up)

At home I hit the button once and wait. Only 5 floors, not that long a wait. At work (didn't have to go today) we have smart elevators. You punch in what floor you want to go to instead of an up/down button, and then a screen tells you which elevator to get on. Then you catch that elevator and ride. Not really any point in hitting the button multiple times with that setup.

One of the schools I was teaching at before my retirement had classrooms and offices on the second floor so I'd use the elevator which was flaky at best. Once it stopped between floors so I tried the "emergency call button: and to my surprise a nice lady answered! She said to wait a few seconds and I could hear some relays and stuff clicking and down I went. I was surprised there was someone there!

Back in the 60's, I remember (as a kid) going to the Eaton store in Montréal and there was a guy operating the lift and calling the merchandise to be found on the floors...

I like to let a really bad fart go just before my floor. Special treat for the next person who gets in.

I hate getting stuck on escalators. You would think they could keep those things running.
