let's say there is a fishable lake. 2 miles in. kayak?
i mtn bike past a lake all the time. i see guys fishing it from the only fishable shore. they pull out nice bass. spring is coming, and i am thinking of pulling a kayak up there. it would be a two mile uphill hike. i have seen kayak "caddies" with balloon wheels. i know i could use an inflatable tube thing..but the ones i see are pretty heavy themselves. plus i'd be nut deep in cold water the entire time.
i dont think i am strong enough to TOW a kayak up with a bike. i'd die in an asthmatic fit/seizure. is this one of those NO pain No gain situations? i'm pretty sure i'm gonna get some odd looks. but that has never stopped me before.

Don't forget, it's another two miles to get it back out.

Yea, after you are worn out from a day of hiking, launching, and paddling around the lake and fighting fish, you need to safely get back out before dark. I know my limits, and wouldn't try it, but you may be in alot better shape, and have far more lung capacity than I do. Good luck.

I once had an inflatable canoe. Used to take it out on the bay. It didn't have much of a keel (regular canoes don't either & kayaks not much) so got blown around a bit, but it was light, foldable, and compact - and cheap. Maybe something like that with a foot operated pump and lightweight paddle would suffice. You could either strap it on the bike or put it in a backpack. Plus if the fishing out in the lake isn't good, you haven't invested a lot of money.

I would try fishing it from the shore for starters. No harm in trying.
A compact rod or two in your backpack and a good cast then no risk of seizures. If no luck then plan B. ![]() |

Fishing is supposed to be fun. Fish it from shore.

OTOH, you can make a featherweight kayak out of cedar strips and Dacron. They weigh in the ounces. A simple trailer? Fish on!

Remember that there is a fine line between fishing and standing on the edge of a lake...

Give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day.
Teach a man to fish and he'll sit in a boat and drink beer all day ![]() |

The weight of a kayak and difficulty of towing it up to the lake depends upon what you get.
A plastic sit on top will weight 45- 60# A cedar strip with fiberglass coating (inside and out) will weight 35# (16') A Skin on Frame kayak (wood frame, dacron skin painted with house paint) will weight 28# - not oz's. It also depends upon how wide the kayak is. Is it a big climb up to the lake? 2 miles is not far on a bike, and you can just grind away in a lower gear and still make progress. Have you ever kayaked? A narrower boat may be tricky to handle fishing and your balance at the same time, if you have no experience (24" wide boat). A strap on set of wheels might be 2.5 to 3' wide, will your path allow that? |

+1 on the tube and waders. I've done it, dress right and it's not that bad.
