Know anything about Nest home surveillance?

DIL has one and likes it. It requires a 110 volts and a wifi connection, and the place I would put one is out of range of the office wifi. They are cheap enough that I could buy one and try it, except mounting it where I want it would involve running a power line and boosting the building wifi somehow.
Anyone have any experience with them?

I've ordered a few outdoor ones, yet to install.

IMO they are a little expensive, but you pay for the easy. If you want to order the 'cloud video backup' for $10 a month you get a 7-day full HD video backup of everything, from which you can pull footage. I like that.

You could probably build something cheaper to get the same features but in the end it would cost just about as much.

if you want the video stored on the 'cloud' to be HQ you need to have a pretty good upload speed.

If you are storing video of your property on their cloud. Who owns the video / images? What rights to the footage do you have?

This is a red flag for me.

I've had three of them for the last few years. Very easy to set-up, but need a strong wi-fi signal where they are positioned. The phone app gives a live pic of all the cams in one screen.

So does random 'transmission data loss' or 'null return':By google, or any other company, when true electronic records are finally obtained.

Why hand over complete control to a stranger?
I'll pass on anything that isn't fully owned with full rights by the owner.

I have two. One covers the front door and the second covers the Rear door. Works good and really easy to install but I have good wifi coverage throughout my house. The only annoying thing was getting all the intruder notifications. I was using too much bandwidth when traveling abroad. I turned that off and there have been no problems.
That being said, I do not use it to stop intruders in their tracks. It is an after the fact record.

If you are in need of immediate assistance, a monitored alarm might be your best choice.

Cheers,

John

Well that's a pretty generalized "digital property rights" question. If that's a red flag for you I hope you don't use a cell phone at all. You better stop posting here as well.

But, functionally I sort of agree with you. I justify it in that the cameras are outdoors and don't show anything not already available to the public anyway.

I could absolutely get with you as far as - cameras indoors, webcams, the microphone on your phone, and ALEXA, the microphone in your home that you agree -by design- to 'always leave on.'

The difference, though minor, is that when I use my cell phone or post on Pelican, I'm not giving strangers a live and recorded video feed of the activities inside my house. I'm not allowing a stranger a video record of my 3 year old daughter running around the house naked (like she does after a bath), a recording of my scantily clad wife, or pictures of my 6 year old son picking his nose.

Minor difference I guess...

I agree with you, and it's unfortunate that you didn't choose to acknowledge my whole post.

What do you mean by "intruder notifications"? False alarms such as animals, random noise, etc?

I have monitored alarms in my buildings. I want a camera to monitor activity outside the buildings.

I found these last night too, seems like a great value if they work well, and eliminates the issues unclebilly was talking about:

https://www.ezvizlife.com

$200-300 wired, with home DVR and an app!
