Not to digress... but this got me curious about "overseeing map acquisition". So what exactly is the job description?

I read this: https://techcrunch.com/2015/03/03/ubers-first-acquisition-will-be-mapping-tech-startup-decarta/

and this: Why Uber is buying map companies

But how does one go about acquiring maps? Digital maps?

Uber needs prior maps for future requirements:

Yes, I will be roaming the globe. Around 6 weeks in each location.

Thanks for asking, Sidney.

It was a bit strange...

I had 3 interviews via Zoom. I thought they all went very well. I was asked many analytical questions and I was easily able to answer them. I aced a very advanced Excel assessment. One of the interviewers commented that I was the first person out of the 45-something that he had interviewed to nail all the questions. They were easy. I felt that the job was well within my scope of abilities.

During the last interview, the Uber guy mentioned that I would probably need to live in an AirBnb roommate situation in some cities (I had been told by others that I would have my own AirBnb apartment). I told him that was a no-go for me. (I am wayyyyy past that sort of thing). I offered to pay for my own lodging out of my pocket.

I was passed over for the position. They mentioned the living arrangement as the reason. I can only assume that they thought that perhaps I was not a team player. Very odd, but I respect their decision and experience.

A company that insisted i be "roomies" is not a company I would really be that excited to work for.

Their loss.

Yeah, they may have viewed your push-back on that issue as an indicator of how badly you wanted the job, and/or your ability to be flexible/team-player/etc. Who knows, but it sounds like they don't have much structure in place for this particular position/department yet. That can be a good thing (getting in on the ground floor/key player for a new project), or it can be a complete clusterfook waiting to happen.

If it's something you REALLY wanted to do, it may have been better to "yes" them to death until hired, then bring up any issues later under the umbrella of "I must have misunderstood that".
Your offered solution, or one involving them compromising might have been possible once you were hired. A good learning and confidence-building experience if nothing else.

Woulda been a deal breaker for me too.

At this stage in life my own space is very high on my list of must haves.

Interesting that they proposed that at, what I'm assuming is not a low pay grade. Back when I was in sales with a very cheap company we only had to share hotel rooms for the big national training meeting, and that was more related to the fact that the small town corporate was in could not support us with enough rooms if we didn't. Most companies realize you need your personal space to unwind.
