Car hobby: pre-Porsche ownership
For many of us, a 911 wasn't the first car we owned and obsessed over that fueled our automotive hobby.
Before you got your 911, what project/hobby cars did you have? I was really into VW's. Here are a few of mine 1991 VW Golf with G60 swap ![]() ![]() ![]() 1989 VW Jetta with mk4 VR6 swap ![]() ![]() Now 1977 911s ![]() Currently being re-assembled after paint ![]() ![]() |

In 1972 my first car was a 1960 VW bug. I replaced that with a brand new 1973 Super Bug. Kept that for one year and replaced it with my brand new 1974 914 2.0. Kept that for 22 years. I bought my current 911 back in 1995. I still have it.

likes to left foot brake.

VW bugs and Street rods before I got into old 911s.
The hot rod VW engines at around 220hp were weak and over stressed. ![]() My current 911 3.6 track engine lasted for 10 years before we did a refresh on it. ![]() Now since maintaining a 935 is not in my budget I picked up a V8 race car. The white #10 640hp 358ci has been somewhat affordable/reliable. ![]() |

From age 12-27 ATV's: Honda Recon then 400ex Bikes: XR200 (gateway drug) crf250r then an injected crf450r
'89 CK2500, bought it from the old man, tossed straight pipes and some "breathe right" goodies on, chubby rubber and a CB with whip antenna...I was off picking up chicks in high school '98 Regal Gran Sport, money pit of modifications that was affectionately known as the "Granny-Stamp". You raced this sleeper and lost, you'd been "Granny-Stamped"...it easily out ran C6 vettes ![]() '95 Z28 w 620hp 355ci sbc (currently my dad owns it) Very fun car, but cranky street manners with 13.2:1CR Now the 911...which will get a sibling in the form of a beater mustang convertible, preferably turbo charged, the wife likes boost ![]()

My first car was a Nissan 200SX, not fast but it was RWD with an independent suspension. Fun enough for me to total it twice. I followed that with a 240SX, again not quick but fun on a twisty backroad. My '70 911T was my first real sports car, I haven't looked back.

Never really had a 911 although one lived in our family for 25 years, drove it a handful of times. Too much car for me...
The 356? U betcha. Been with it since a few days after I was born.

A 1991 Toyota MR2 (2nd gen) was my first foray into the whole car hobby scene. Did informal rallies and started autocrossing with it. Was fun, and I learned what snap-oversteer was!

I've had an array of daily drivers, but as "toys/projects":
67 Chevy Camaro (also a dd, sort of), TR3A, TR6, TR8 and then...'87 911 Along the way a few motorcycles as well, but I'm not counting those because the question was about cars. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (Disclaimer: I'm not real good at saving pics of my project cars, so some of these are the same color & year as mine, but aren't photos of my car. My '3A never looked that good the few times it struggled out of the garage under its own power.) Last edited by dw1; 09-03-2014 at 03:49 PM.. |

Clay.O - Love those VWs!!!!
The amazing thing is how you have tidied up the engine bays. Not a vaccum hose or wire in sight! That is truly classy work! Especially when you compare it to a standard engine bay from the same models! Staggering! One of my past loves was a 1985 3 door Mk2 8 valve Golf GTI. A fantastic car that I still miss to this day |

Like others, I've several different DD over the years but have had a "cool" car since I was about 20 YO.
My first "fun" car was a 78 Camaro, bone stock with a 305/Auto and a 3.08 rear end. By the 10th year of owning it had been painted from black to Corvette Polo Green and had a pretty wicked 400 SBC with a 150 shot of nitrous with a 4.10 positraction rear end. High 11s on the hose was the best I could get at the dragstrip. The next one was a 94 Z28 with a mostly stock LT1 with a 6 speed gearbox. I added just about every bolt on part you could buy for an FBody at the time. I got it down to low 13s with full exhaust and street tires. The next one was the SC which I still have and absolutely enjoy the crap out of driving. It's not a drag car by any means and I learned(the hard, expensive way) to not drive it like one.
