What kind of steel is this?

It's .040" thick, magnetic, and very easy to bend and form, and stays bent.

This strip is about 1/4" wide. Has 3 rivets in it.

I need to get some.

Garage
Could be any annealed steel. Might be nickel but doesn't look like it...

Looks like galvanized ? (zinked )
Steel is pretty malleable as far as bendable .

20 gauge galvanized

How much of it do you need? My steel fabricator is across the street from my shop and we are buddies. We use this all the time.

Hey Mike, thanks! I'll send you a PM.

It's definitely galvanized. And very soft. The drilled out rivets are in there forever. This strip is off a 68 911 door frame. It rivets a thicker, threaded steel plate to the outside of the aluminum vent window horizontal to attach it to the main hoop. One year only. Everything has to come off to strip, sand, polish and re-anodize the polished aluminum.

Sean, get a hold of John Paterek and see what they use; they might even have some prefabbed up, ready to use.
Good luck

Thanks Bill, I'll give them a call after I get some stock that Mike is sending me.

Will you be at Hershey this year? I just registered.

Hi Sean, I'll be there, looking forward to it.
Whether or not I drive the 930 there depends on the weather.
Are you going to have a full complement of cad plated bits and pieces?

Cool, will be good to see you again. I'm bringing:

Chrome door handles and door frames, still have to find a 356 frame
Clear anodized early door frames and a decklid grille
Cerakoted fan & housing
All kinds of cad and zinc and black and grey phosphate
and maybe a control arm. These turned out so nicely, might bring one down.

Got two long strips of steel from Mike today, width cut perfectly and I can do as many 68 door frames as possible now.

Thank you Mike! I really appreciate you help on this. You are definitely one of the reasons this board is so great! Will be bringing some beer and brisket down this summer.

Well, it has to be rich in iron, nickel, cobalt or manganese. Those are the metals that are truly magnetic. I'm sure if they are alloyed then the magnetic properties diminish according to the % of the other metals.
