Whining sound coming from speaker, help?

I have to turn to you clever folks again.

I have a whining sound that seems to be coming from the speakers on my S2000. I check the radio ground and its tight and clean. Strange thing is that it whines little as I rev the motor, but once I let off the gas with it in gear, the whining sound gets loud but as soon as I get it out of gear or press in the clutch, it gets back to the slight sound I had before. This is driving me nuts:mad:. Where do you guys think is coming from. I am sure its a lose ground somewhere, but where to look and what does it have to do with the gear box? Stock radio btw.

Oh, I tried to turn off the radio and the slight whine still there. I do have an amp in there installed by the dealer. check that and the ground is solid and tight.

Had that problem several decades ago when I installed an amp into my car. An RFI filter took care of it.

There is a whatchamacallit inside the alternator for that very purpose.
Also another whatchamacallit in-line on the big wire going into the radio.
Or somewhere about that area.

Hope that helped.

If it just popped up out of nowhere one of two things come to mind:

1)- an RCA cable is pinched somewhere, or partially out of the socket, causing a ground loop.

2)- amp has failed, blown internal ground.

Check for a loose RCA or pinched or cut cable somewhere. Maybe someone ran a screw thru it. Happens.

Disconnect RCA at radio, start car- whine still there (I suspect it will be since it's there radio off)

get another rca- cheap one is fine, plug it in to radio and amp (don't bother routing it nicely- over the seats, whatever) and try again. If it's still there once you plug it in, likely you have a bad amp- internal ground has failed and is grounding thru RCA and radio. Could've popped for numerous reasons, but usually when you hear that kind of noise and the RCA's are OK then it's over.

Check to make sure the speaker connections aren't touching metal somewhere in the doors as well, that will kill the amp.

I would look for a bad ground from the transmission/ motor to the body.

It's 2000 already?
Geez. How time flies. Gotta reset that 12:00 on the VCR.

I had something similar about 20 years ago. Turned out to be my ex wife. I stopped letting her ride with me and the annoying sound went away!

Long shot but how are your engine and trans rubber mounts? any chance one of your mounts is torn and your engine is moving more then it should tugging on some wires. check engine ground cable.

Is the amp wired by the dealer or factory plug in? If wired by the dealer check the wiring.

Don't rule out an ignition problem in addition to a stereo problem, even if the car is running well.

By the dealer long ago. Car has 67000 miles on it. Sound just started about a month ago.

I am not sure if its high power output (RCA) or low power (is that what's called?) through those factory plugs? Pinched? Meaning its pinched and worn through its sheathing?

I'm really not sure on a modern car, but for example on our Porsches there was a RF supressor in the engine bay. I suppose something like that could go bad.

Ground strap. Hondas typically have it going from the valve cover to the body. Seen it cause this before. They are usually thin gauge and oxidize quickly.
