Diverticulitis...oh boy

Confirmed, dealing with a spell of Diverticulitis. I guess I haven't been eating as much fiber rich food as I should. On 2 different antibiotics and a pro-biotic as well as drinking plenty of water.

Anyone else suffer from Diverticulitis?

Best of luck. Make sure you take it seriously, because the consequences (abscess/perforation) are really, really not fun.

No kidding! I underwent two surgeries during the summer of '85 for just that problem. The hospital time prompted me to think about what's really important.

Yes Sir.....what fun I have had. Mine started before Thanksgiving, a little pain on left side at the belt area. Got worse and worse - Doc put me on 2 antibiotics and a sent me for a CT scan. Yep, diverticulitis....

Don't let it fool you, I was eating whole wheat products, fresh salads, nuts and it caught it with me. I quit eating the salads and nuts and my symptoms cleared up in a few days. Last weekend I had a salad - By Sunday afternoon I'm back in pain on my left side. I've quit the salads and back on all cooked food and feel fine. So much for healthy eating!!!

Yes, next stop is the dreaded colonoscopy in February

Yep, I've got Diverticulitis. Other than the original problem that alerted me to the fact I have Diverticulitis, it hasn't been a concern. I don't do special diets, although my normal diet is pretty good, and in something like 8 years it hasn't flared up.

Went thru Diverticulitis attacks for 2 years until they finally got serious and removed 14 inches of my Colon that they claimed was prone to it because of pockets. Not polyps but pockets.

Use the fibre stuff you mix with water daily to make sure I get enough water to go with it. It's like my morning glass of orange juice only it ain't actually orange juice.

It's great to not have any more diverticulitis attacks, but the 14 inches they removed increased both the frequency and urgency of going to the restroom. Have had to not only lower my standards of where I will stop and go, but have learned to always carry extra pants and a roll of TP. Some of the nicest places have the worst restroom facilities, and some of the most filthiest looking joints have the nicest and cleanest. It's really a C**P shoot, pun intended.

When I had my last (and only) colonoscopy attempt seven years ago the doc stopped because of diverticulosis and sent me to the barium room. Apparently diverticulosis is a precursor to diverticulitis. However they put me on the ten year schedule, so I don't get another one for three more years. Since my father died of colon cancer, I thought they did direct relatives sooner. According to the doc it's still every ten years. My father never ate a vegetable and ate lots of bacon & gravy fed to him by my mother. Good luck & try to stay on top of it.

Yep, spent 3 days in the frikkin' hospital back in October. I went to urgent care and they sent me for an MRI who told me to go directly to the ER.

Lots of antibiotics via IV and no food or drink for the entire stay. Had a follow up colonoscopy a couple of weeks ago and all is well. Only change to my diet is to add more fiber.

Talked to my wife about this thread. She says she makes sure she ingests at least 20 servings of fibre a day. She is a retired dietician so she knows what she is talking about.
She makes sure that I have at least 12 servings of fibre a day.

An apple a day is great(2x the fibre of a banana). Nuts, beans, peas, bran, oatmeal, fruits, veggies etc etc.

Important as well is getting some exercise as it increases your metabolism. Who knows how much cancer is prevented by eating more fibre(colon cancer, pancreatic cancer etc).

Being aware of what you are eating and how much can make a big difference. Read food labels as well.

I always thought he was a short crunchy guy. Google has him at well over 6 feet and passing away from an aortic aneurysm, and Marfan Syndrome. MS is associated with really tall people.

I started using 2 teaspoons of Benefiber in liquid after my colonoscopy. I just mix it in with my Peach tea and it isn't that bad.
