2010 Quattroporte

So the pimpster Maserati thread got me looking. Came across a 2010 Quattroporte on Ebay. Very nice looking car except for the horrible rims. 21K miles. $45K.

My wife wants an XJL but I just can't warm up to them. But the Quattroporte I like.

So what's up with these cars? Are they maintenance monsters? reliable? any gremlins to look out for?

When I was racing in time attack in 2010, there was a guy in my run group that had a 2 door one of these.

He sure didn't like to be passed by me in my old 911 and would usually come in a lap or 2 early before I caught him.

They sound great, have weird looks, but sadly aren't all that fast.

They went to a true torque converter automatic in about 2008 that eliminated the horrible and clutch eating Cambiocorsa F1 gearbox, that was really the only previous major issue with the car. Parts are crazy expensive but they are supposed to be pretty reliable. There are quite a few people that have taken the earlier coupes and Quattroportes over 100k with minimal repairs. I think the newer ones look great and sound amazing, for the dirt cheap prices it's hard to go wrong.

A friend bought one like it that was only a couple of years old and had only 4,000 miles on it. It was a maintenance and repair hog and extremely expensive. He spent more money on maintenance and repairs than he paid for the car. He dumped it and got a 997 C4S after only a couple of years. I think they gave him about $20,000 on the trade-in. Beautiful car. It was like being wrapped in an Italian suit. But I'd never go closer to one than a ride in someone else's car.

A "2 door" Quattroporte????? How can that be????

Seriously.

4-door sounds a lot sexier in Italian than English.

What I like, the interior doesn't give off a built in a micro-robotic fashion vibe.

Its a slight step back in time in decor.

It lacks the useable design of the Porsche 4 door.

The bad, the one person I know with one, well, its not just fluids and filters.

The new direct injection Jaguar 5.0L seems to have some additional potential maintenance/work on items caused by direct injection and its resulting difference in internal soot. My 4.2L V8 has nothing but fluid/filters in 9 years and 62K miles.

It'd be a tough choice, I have a slightly higher trust of the Jaguar Mechanically, but enjoy the Maserati's "crudeness".

I'd say if cost of maintenance is not an issue, get whichever you want. The Maserati will be more exciting.

Ultimately, I'd go with a Panamera over the Maserati without the feeling of any dilemma in the decision making. The XJL vs the Maserati is a tougher choice to make. The reduced planned maintenance cycle of the XJL would likely swing me.

The saying is "All the running costs of a Ferrari without the street cred." Some people see that as an insult, but there's another way to look at it. You can get a 360 or whatever uses the same engine for about 3X as much, and be stuck paying the maintenance on it. Or you can get a Maserati for 1/3 the Ferrari and have plenty of cash left over for the same maintenance.

Personally, as much as I like them, I'd get a Jaguar - just as beautiful, cheaper to buy and run.

let us remember what made Maserati special. it was not the partnership with Chrysler to put out a special edition lebaron as many believe. it was in fact many years before that the brand earned its reputation.

Have you looked at an S8 or S7? Post kids my wife will probably land in either of those two Audis or a Panamera.

I believe in another thread, someone pointed out the Maserati has a cross plane crankshaft, and the Ferrari a flat plane crankshaft. Not quite the same engine.

Unlike the Maser Spider, which I can't find the appeal, I actually like the Quattroporte. Its just the Panamera simply blew it away in almost every aspect when I got to try them back to back. The Maser does have a lot of appeal. I liked the large leather stitching. When I said crude in my prior post, I didn't mean it in a bad way.

I hate the Audi marque with a passion that is difficult to explain. But I could be persuaded to make an exception for the current version of the S6, S7 or S8. I'd recommend one of them before the Quattroporte.

You can get a brand new one for under $500 a month, according to the banner ad on top of this page since I looked at this thread.

You'd probably spend more than that on the 2010 in annual maintenance. New car=warranty=no repairs.
